This guy can wield a lion...
LionTailTale.jpg

...You can too!

Clearly showing it is a 2-handed weapon, so you can't use multiples or a shield.

Note also that he has it standing in mud- this will double the odds of a secondary infection with a glancing blow from the claws. That is an advanced tactic!

In all seriousness:

1) the Theban Sacred Bander idea is good- having lost his partner would make him as close to a ronin as would be likely in that culture.

2) the spear- any spear- would be the weapon of choice, and there are many to choose from. I like the Greatspear, personally, but it IS 2handed, so wouldn't work with sword & board. OTOH, you could go with an oversized short-spear and still use a shield. It would be feat-intensive, though: 2WF, Imp. Shield bash. As I recall, there is even a tactical feat for warriors trained in shield-wall type tactics, if anyone feels like mirroring your PC. If you want nearly mundane classes, I'd probably go 2WF ranger mixed with Fighter until Rgr3, then pure Fighter. Rgr/Rog, Rgr/Duskblade, Rgr/BttlSorc and Rgr/Beg also have some possibilities for this build.

Phalanx Fighting might be a thematically fitting feat. Unfortunately, its main benefit only comes from fighting alongside others with the same feat. Maybe get a (literal) Cohort?

Yep- a cohort is more likely than someone else wanting to mirror his PC.

Oh yeah- I'd probably also make the shield spiked.

BTW, if you go to Rgr6, you'll gain Imp.2WF, a bonus to your favored enemy...and an animal companion. You could get that lion you've always wanted.;)

Also, consider the fine Greco-Roman martial art of Pankration! I realize that's more Monk than Samurai, but hey... Samurai belong to the Elves. ;)

If you're going for a spear, I'd highly recommend the Changing property from the Magic Item Compendium, that allows you to alter the Spear length/style each round.
