And, because some of my friends are struggling artists, let me suggest that if you have $20 and want to get yourself a nice Christmas present, you might consider commissioning a sketch from one of the artists. I got this one from Acquana, for my GM on GM's Day this year. It was one of his PCs from a previous game:

While we're on the topic, can anyone recommend a good resource for pics of old-style hobbits?

The Crabtree sketches in the Complete Book of Gnomes & Halflings are great, but since Lord of the Rings, all halfling art seems to be of 3E quasi-kender or runty, street-urchin hobbits in the Middle Earth style.
 


While at Gen Con UK this year, I managed to get a character portrait done by David Esbri (who's worked with WotC, Mongoose, Kenzer, and Hero among many others) for a very reasonable price. I've just checked his website and he offers the same service by post. I can't show you the artwork he created for me (because I don't have a scanner), but there is a sample on his site. I highly recommend him :D
