Character Name?

To make up a random Forgotten Realms name, pick a word out of the dictionary (or wherever) and replace every "i" with a "y". I will demonstrate this with examples from the Internet Explorer menus:

Fyle
Edyt
Vyew
Prynt
Prynt Pre'vyew

I think I might have posted this before, actually. Also, I have no idea what "onomastikon" is. I've never onomastikated.

That's what they all say.

Well, my character names mostly come from ordinary names with some letters swapped around or a syllable changed.

Kyle -> Cayl the rogue.
Stefan -> Drefan the cleric.
Valdemar -> Haldemar the burgomeister.

In fact, many old Scandinavian and Viking names are excellent for fantasy. Valdemar, Harald, Stigbjörn, and so on. All of them famous kings, by the way.

A quick Google search found this. Quite informative.

I make something up or upon occasion borrow a name I heard somewhere.

My current stable

Coda, a ranger made it up, from code of honor and Cody

Melkar the cobbler (er sorcerer) name from Rolemaster, he's an "Iconic" evil Wizard

Drozdt A dwarf Fighter Its supposed to be Hungarian a friend of mine mentioned the name as one he wanted to use back in the 2e days. I beat him to it :)

Danagrin Redapple a halfling ranger name from GURPS Fantasy Folk

Captain Beaumont- AKA Captain Whitehair originally he was a paladin from a short campaign witha silier name. In 3e the concept is a ftr6/devdef4 and the name is normalized

How many names do you need, anyway?

As long as you've got Falstaff the fighter, Angore the cleric, and Filmar, the mistress of magic, you're set!

Something I do for characters in role playing and in stories, is go to http://www.savergen.com/onldict/jap.html and just type in a word the describes the character.

Equitas the Paladin- Latin for Justice (I think)
L'espion The Rogue- French for The Spy I think
Taiyou god of the sun(different story than the other two)-- Japanese for Fire/Sun
Karyuudo God of thieves and bounty hunters- Japanese for Hunter

I often use Tolkein for elvish names and cobble something together. Other races I just "riff" until something strikes me as proper or maybe do the online translator (Latin for humans, Japanese for OA characters).

Names

Oh gosh...

I often end up with silly names like DARKLONE...

my favorite char is named Scarron, appreviated from the scarred one...

Blodderick Cloak Nibblenock... typical gnomish names from a book.

Kabochak. Barbarian with huge axe. Well... Sounded right. CHUCK!

Then I often use Dawn Ibachs techniques. Simply spoil a common name. Napoleon: Naleon. Marilyn Monroe: Marylen Munrock.
