To me, it looks good on him. I know very few professional-quality artists that would do *anything* for free. Just look at the prices at any of the WoTC artists' galleries. Some of them creep up on my entire savings account

I myself work for free, unless you consider constructive critism a fee I always ask people to be blunt about what they think about it. As long as they just don't say "Your work sucks and so do you" Bleh.
