Character Suggestions

Ok , unfortunately in my last game session my 9th level Assimar (hopefully spelt right) sorcerer was killed by a spell weaver. This was very annoying. I now hate the prosmatic spray spell.

Anyway i now need to think up a new character but i really want to play an orignal character (that is not a monster) I dont have that many books so i have been searching online for new races and classes. So far i have found the dragoon class which is very cool and i might play that. But i was wondering if anyone else could think of a cool , unique 9th level character for me to play.

any help would be cool ,
thanks

I personally like the Swashbuckler class in the Complete Warrior. I like it because there are so many ways you can visualize the character. You can play a Musketeer, Pirate, or whatever else comes to mind. Everyone visualizes the classes in the PHB pretty much the same way. All Paladins are Knights (I hate that stereotype personally) and all Wizards are Gandalf knock-offs. At least the Swashbuckler has more than one option for it.

Go with a high saves build to protect yourself in the future. Multiclass into three or four classes to get a lot going for you with utility. Be a high-dex, high-cha ranged guy, with a level in Bard (reputation for singing & humming during battle), one or more in cleric for healing and more saves, a few in fighter for the HP at 1st level and the feats, then continue on in Rogue. You won't be the toughest guy out there, but if you take the Rapid Shot tree of feat progressions you will get out more shots to dole out damage. The BAB wouldn't be that high, but you would sink skill points into Tumble so you can move freely in a combat (in case melee guys try to jump you) to heal downed party members or get into position for a backstab. Train yourself up to get some poison for those ranged attacks too, and get some interesting things going with those . Again, you wouldn't be a powerhouse but a more utilitarian for the rest of the party. Your levels in rogue would play to your advantage with the special abilities, and bard would be good for social situations. With a level or two of cleric you would be able to heal more plus turn the low level undead that might annoy you because they can't be sneak-attacked.

Or you could go for the old, small peasant-looking guy that is a master of judo and tosses opponents around as a pure monk.

Or you could go the pure Bard route and build something vicious around tripping or disarming with a whip.

For me, coming up with a unique character isn't about classes and races. Think background and personality, then pick the class(es) that fit. I don't know anything about your campaign world, but I suggest you look at plots and events in the game that you can build from. Random ideas:

A former henchman of a villain the party defeated in the past. The character has "seen the light" and is looking for redemption. (Any class)

A veteran of a major battle/war in the campaign history who is now freelancing, but has enemies and friends in high places. (probably fighter or maybe fighter/rogue if he was a commando type).

A fugitive from justice. Accused of a crime he didn't commit, he is trying to clear his name (any class, but sorcerer-based would be interesting).

The point is, an interesting back-story will help you choose skill combinations that might not be min-maxed, but will be interesting.

There is a concept that I've been wanting to play for a while:

A human farmer in his late 40's or early 50's. He is a devoult worshipper of the god of farming or whatever, but his wife dies of a fever (or whatever) and his only child dies a few months later in some other way.

Now, he is faced with the prospect of starting over. He is sick of farming and decides to start a new life. He tracks down the local temple of the god of magic and begins his life as a wizard. He now hates the god of farming for not saving his family and adventures to learn more about the world and magic.

One of my players ran with the concept and is playing a cleric/wizard on his way to becoming a Mystic Theurge. Cool character.

Sidenote: Its Aasimar. An assimar is the descendant of a human and magic butt-goblin. :D

Hmm... Ninth level non-monster PC...

Dwarf Fighter/Dwarf Defender. WALKING SHIELD.
Human Clr/Wiz/Mystic Theurge. All the power, none of the wait.
Drow Elf Ranger. Eh, nevermind. Its been done.
Dwarf Monk/Drunken Master. Thats just FUN!
If you like Creepy/Evil, a Tiefling Necromancer is nice. Bonus cool points if you take MWP: scythe.

Now THAT's a character concept. Very cool. One of the nice things about starting at a higher level is that you can use your various classes to reflect the character's history. I have an noble NPC in my world who started out as a monk, got pulled back into politics when a war started, was killed and resurrected and became a devout worshipper of the goddess who resurrected her. She's got levels in Monk, Aristocrat and Cleric reflecting these different parts of her life. Definitely not an efficient character, but very well-rounded.

Couple of ideas:

A halfling fighter. Not a rogue fighter, just a fighter. Quick draw and the throw bonus and the size bonus could make a really devistating throwing dagger fighter.

A sorcerer that has had his "mind" switched with his cat familiar.

A deep gnome sea-druid just because I can't find any more contradictions to put into one character.
