Characters with Familiars

I'm thinking about writing some house rules to expand the roles of familiars for wizards, but I don't have a lot of fiction that features familiars. I have Steven Brust's Vlad Taltos novels, but are there are other series out there that feature familiars, or familiar like creatures, that I could read for more ideas?

The cleric quintet by Salvatore features a really devious imp familiar named Druzil. If you want to see a wicked familiar in action, check this series out!

I recommend The Bridge by Iain Banks. When I began to read this novel, I never imagined it would feature a familiar but it does and it's very funny.

The 'Familiar Dragon' books by Daniel Hood are a good place to start. Also, the Farseer Trilogy by Robin Hobb; the strong Witted bond between Fitz and Nighteyes should give you some ideas.

I don't have a novel to recommend, but I can recommend an RPG book: Ars Magica. The core book has some cool ideas for familiars. Obviously you couldn't use the rules as written, but they could help you generate ideas. And the book can be downloaded for free!

Starman

Greebo the Witches cat from Discworld (not technically a familiar but way cool - and sexy too:)). I wonder if Gaspode could be considered a familiar too...
