I would like to second the panel idea put forth by Umbran

For the first round, you might want to do as you did for the ENnies - have the boards elect a panel of judges. After they've narrowed it down to 10 or 15 proposals, you can then let the full membership vote

The you can reasonably open it up for a community vote. I would go with a final group of 20-30 to be publicly voted to 10.

As far as process goes I would like to recommend following the WoTC model.

Round 1: one page submission with the addition of 1 submission per contestant.

Round 2: 15 pager following a set template. Publicly voted to 3

Round 3: 100 pager. Winner selected by the community.

I would think doing this completely blind would be damn near impossible since many of us publicly advertise or discuss our campaigns. Granted not everyon ewill e submitting their current campaign world but many will.

BluWolf's proposal sounds excellent.

Although running completely blind would be impossible, I still think that names and settings should not be linked. I'd like to think that Joe Lurker has as much of an opportunity as some well-known member of the community. Otherwise, it could break down into a popularity contest.

I'd strongly suggest retaining some money to cover operational costs. I'd also suggest making sure your chairity is as apolitical as possible (a burn ward in a children's hospital, for example).

You may also want to open the rules up a bit. WotC was looking for standard fantasy settings. You have more leeway. I'd take advantage of that.

Not a bad proposal, but I think I'd rather buy a book with a collection of 10 page proposals. Then it'd be packed with ideas and the author would retain ownership of the setting. If they wanted, they could expand it to a 100 page (or more) setting.

I agree with biggusgeekus 100% on the apolitical charity.

im a hard line green... and im sure there are a lot of people out there who would prefer that if i won i wouldn't give to certain charities. apolitical is the way to go...

Also, the WotC setting proposal had limitations. Perhaps for the Enworld setting search we can remove some of these limits and allow authors free reign? (If we're using the ten page proposals, I mean)

I have a sore throat. I'd planned to say something important, but I can't talk to do so.

Um . . . but yeah, here's my thought.

This book is supposed to be by a member of the ENWorld community. Thus, I think that, regardless of what is submitted, the final product should try to use as much open content as possible from all the different publishers. This way, it would really be a community effort. Maybe, once we have a rough idea of the winning setting, we'll maybe show it off, and ask publishers to help out by sending in some stuff that the setting could use. Maybe if there's a feudal society, someone could help out with rules for jousting/nobility stuff. I dunno. Just a thought.

Charitable Orgs

Here's a thought...

Better World Roleplaying needs funding for its scholarship and grant programs. The scholarship will be for educators who are seeking higher education and who have used roleplaying games in the classrom as a teaching tool and who also plan to do so in the future. My thought is that some of these people will be the administrators and policy makers of the future and by helping them get their education perhaps they will increase support for RPG in education.

The grant program will be geared toward distributing roleplaying game materials to underfunded after school programs/comunity centers/families etc.... (When they are available these grants will either be in the form of money or BWRs educational RPGs. Until then we will use standard RPGs).

Better World Roleplaying, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and we are finally in a position to start accepting public financial support. So, it would be great if the powers that be would be willing to consider choosing BWR as the charity of choice. I am willing to guarantee that all of the donations that come to us through the setting search would go directly into the scholarship and grant programs. And as always, our financial records are open to the public for inspection without question.

FYI, The Game Loft is another nonprofit roleplaying-oriented organization. If anyone knows of any other RPG-related charities please speak up. I would like to see roleplayers supporting roleplayers even if it isn't through BWR.

Public Vote

It would be a very bad idea to make part of such a contest subject to an open vote. Online voting is notoriously non-representative and subject to easy manipulation. And how many voters are actually going to read all 100-1000 submissions? Almost none. So of what value are their votes? I think everyone will be much better off with judges with some background in the industry.

(BTW, I am not suggesting I would make a good judge. I want to enter . )
