Charles Stross on Gary Gygax as World Dictator

Oh... now this has got my mind all fired up.

Near-future Sci-fi RPG.

The Internet 3.0, also known as "The Kingdom of webs"

3d graphic user interface. Large clusters are arranged like cities, with similar information sharing space on vast neon-ivory towers. People jack themselves into the kingdom, where it is often every person for themselves. Some anonymous viewers float by, little more than beads of barely-visible data, but the more adept and aggressive started building Avatar programs, and taking advantage of their maneuverability, using tools to /attack and /kill other users (by booting them from the kingdom)

The heroes are freelance network security reps. They move through large sectors finding hostile applications and taking them off line, permanently.

Hero classes include the codebreaker, whose mighty tools break through the meager defenses of his foes, The boardmaster, whose skills lay in manipulating and controlling message traffic, and the Recoverist, whose packet-cleaning abilities can fix damaged sectors with ease.

weapons include the Banhammer, ICE pick, and instant firewall.

enemies include the 1337, a subset of humanity who equate their own self-worth with how many sites they can destroy, retroviruses manifest as great hulking beasts who spread their infectious plage. Worms chew through mail messages, tearing apart whole mail servers...

If you subscribe to the theory that the structure of a language also structures the ways of thinking of its native speakers, then think about what effect the basis of the new hyper-reality will have on the future.

Killing things and taking their stuff... IN SPACE.

I always said that World of Warcraft will usher in the end of mankind. And Blizzard planned it all: By throwing one mega-hit-game after the other at us, they raised their popularity. They also tested out ways to make people addicted to their stuff. Then they hit mankind with WoW, getting even more people hooked - and also getting continuous payment. Soon, they will expand their platform to get more people by creating a chat program that uses the WoW platform (you can only create "diplomat" characters that never level and can't go outside cities, or fight monsters, but can talk to others and all that) to enslave more people. When they create the sequel, using VR gear, it will be too late for those poor souls. You thought the people in the Matrix were bad off? Think again!

Say YES to mankind! Say YES to our world. Say NO to World of Wardraft.
