Charm Monster/ Prot Evil/ Dominate

Huh, well I'll be. That does indeed appear to be the case.

Heh, bugger that. Guess I'll be implementing a house rule at my table, then. That's far too much blocked for a low level spell. :p

A common complaint which has also been extended to Silence. Would you differenciate between Protection from spells and Circle spells as far as what they suppressed given that the circle spells are 3rd level?

In all likelyhood, no. I'd essentially be considering Magic Circle vs Alignment as equivalent to Protection From Alignment, Mass. Same effect, more targets.

Edit: oh, and I agree with Silence being too strong. It needs a saving throw regardless of how one interacts with it (targeted or area), for starters. Actually, let me revise that - it needs to be higher level and have a save. Then put a single target 'power word: silent' kinda spell in its place at 2nd level.

Since the original question has been answered, I don't feel bad about hijacking the thread: It seems to me that the the use of silence as a cheap counterspell seems to be the main problem with it.

I've considered modifying silence so that it does three things in the area of effect: 1) it acts as deafness to all in the area, 2) it provides immunity to sonic attacks, and 3) it encloses the area with a bubble that is impervious to sound. This duplicates most of the current effects of silence - you can't hear anything, no noise leaves the area, you can't use shout, etc.. However it doesn't prevent command words from being used or spells with verbal components- they would still have the failure chance due to not the caster's deafness, but not automatic failure.

To be honest, I have never really seen this as a problem, since most Enchantment (charm) spells aren't really meant to be used for combat purposes IMNSHO. Since they are only supressed and most last longer then protection from evil ever will, it seemed like a non-issue. Sure, the bad guy may be your new best friend, but the guys you are with are still the ones you trust enough to sleep around at night.
