Well things seem expensive in USA. Cheapest slop here is probably a fish and chip shop.

After D&D on Sunday we went through a rough (by local standards) area of town.

Menu. 1NZD= 0.55 usd.

Shop had a strange smell. Childhood memories. They cooked in beef fats oil.

That pile of fries. $2. Hot dog same price. NZ hot dog is a battered saveloy (type of sausage).

Burger was a steak burger. Kinda average bit it was $4 usd or so. Wife had a cheese and bacon burger. Fish was $2.20 ysd approx fir a piece of Hoki.

Whole meal was $20 or $11 usd.

I live by myself so I either grocery shop for myself either for the week, to make something specific, or go out to eat. Whichever the case, here in Western New York, prices have pretty much doubled since COVID. But if you shop smart, you can find weekly deals with a lot of buy one get one, but they usually raise the regular price of those items. I definitely don't eat out as much and rarely if ever go to bars anymore.

Coffee here starts at around $2.20 usd. More typical its $3.20.
I dont bother with small boutique coffee shops, or Starbucks. Dunkin, Tim Hortons, etc. A little shop opened up on the corner of my street before COVID and I decided to stop in and grab a cup. A large cup was $5 swill. I never went back. If I do get coffee while running errands, I prefer McDonalds, they used to have $0.99 larges, but they have gone up in the last couple of years. I have their app on my phone so with their reward points I can still get any size for $0.99.

A good classic fish and chip shop is always good value for money and generally decent food too. I live in Auckland cbd so I have to go a bit further afield to get something resembling a smalltown fish and chip store.
