Cheap, simple overland mapping software

I need to make regional and national maps. I have CC3, but the learning curve is far above what I want or need.

I just want something where I can plug symbols into a map, preferably a hex grid, and save it as a jpg, or similar common- use image.

I have heard good things about Wonderdraft (Wonderdraft).

I'd recommend checking out the free version of Inkarnate. If you need more functionality than that I'd recommend Wonderdraft. For $30 it makes great maps in multiple styles and is very intuitive to learn.

Worldographer will easily do the old TSR-style hexmaps with inserted symbols.
It even supports multiple scales and auto-expansion. The learning curve is much lower. And it's hexagon-based, for all those old-school style map-crawls.

And, if you want a map quick, it can do random maps.

I like the look of that. I've downloaded the free version and will check out the complexity. I only need a couple large-scale maps.

Another vote for Hexographer/Worldographer. If you're just interested in making hex maps, it works pretty well and the interface is only a little wonky.
