Chessex battlemat - removing marks

Sqwonk

First Post
I drew a battle in purple markers (the correct ones for projector slides) on my Chessex battlemat. I did not erase if for 2 weeks. Now that I want to erase- the drawing is not totally going away.

Any ideas on what to use to get it off?

For future- what colors are safe/better?

I really do not want to buy another battle-mat.

Anything in the red/orange family will tend to leave permanent marks, particularly if left in on the mat for awhile.

I found no tricks to get them out on my old mat, but hopefully you'll get some good answers from others here. My inability to remove those marks, plus the inconvenience of wet-erase, were what turned me off of battlemats (and on to permanent graph paper maps, and now Tact-Tiles).

My wife discovered (because we had accidentally used permanent marker on the mat) that Orange Clean Oven CLeaner will remove all marker stains (old or permanent) off the mat without damaging the mat.

Red is harder to remove than black, blue or green.

I had some pretty decent results with an old Amway product called LOC. If you have some, just let it sit and soak in (undiluted for several minutes). Worked for me...even on the red stain.

I had previously tried an Orange cleaner and it got mostly everything except the red. Good luck.

In case you were in the mood to try soemthing experimental....fingernail polish remover will remove the stain...

and all of the grid from your battlemat too! About the worst thing you could use.

"just sayin"

;)

We typically use green, brown, blue and black and haven't had any problems yet. However, not all of those projector markers are wet-erase so you have to be careful. I bought one the other day and was lucky to notice it said 'permanent' on the side before using it. It looked just like the rest of the wet-erase markers.

My group accidentally used a permanent marker on my mat right after I bought it. We also learned the hard way that nail polish remover is quite efficient at removing EVERYTHING! Anyway, steer away from red and clean the mat before rolling it up at the end of the evening. Thanks for the orange clean tip also...will come in handy!

PEACE!
