i thought the capture of the worm was laughable at best. it made the worm look pathetic and inept. like Dagger75 said, it should have just dove under the sands, or even slithered off the platform once it was clear of the "trap." very very disappointing.

The sandy area where the worm was trapped was surrounded on three sides by rock cliffs. It's very reasonable to say that there was a rock floor beneath the sand, and worms cannot move through rock.

At the same time, there was also the 'net' beneath the worm by that point as well, and since it could hold the warm well enough to lift it, it's not a stretch to assume the creature could not simply go through it.

But I'm very pleased with the miniseries. I dispised the Lynch film, mostly because it made the fremen into wimps that needed technology, and the Harkonnen disgusting and sick without any cleverness.

I liked the first mini-series because it was closer to the book and I could overlook the flaws. The second series has been even better. At first I was bothered by the change in actors for Stilgar, but by the final ep I could not imagine the original Stilgar doing half so well. And Alia's been excellent.

After seeing the conclusion last night, I think this was far better done than the first miniseries. I'm very disappointed that they didn't do the original this well.

To be fair, though, the first novel is not only monstrously complex in both plot and theme, but it has the baggage of a "classic" going along with it, which makes a satisfactory adaptation even more difficult.

Let's hope the ratings will support a future God Emperor of Dune project. SciFi (and the Herbert people) seem to be making a legitimate effort to turn Dune into a major media property.

And for the record, I recognize that the Lynch film has lots and lots of very serious problems. I liked it anyway. But CoD (and, by extension, the original miniseries) is starting to replace the film in my mind as the definitve adaptation of Dune.

I liked every new actor in this miniseries better than the people playing them in the original miniseries.

Jessica - The other actress was too motherly. Jessica should have an edge about her, and a very deliberate, controlled manner. Alice Krige carried this very well, I thought.

Duncan - Much better. The actors who played Yueh, Thufir and Duncan in the original miniseries all sucked.

Stilgar - The guy who played Stil in the first miniseries was the chief in Das Boot. The guy can act. But you'd never know that from watching the thing. I chalk it up to a language issue and not buying into the material. Either way, Stephen Berkoff (sp?) was perfect for the part, if a bit older than I'd pictured Stilgar.

Even P. H. Moriarty (whose Cockney accent I found totally inappropriate last time)grew on me this time around.
