Chiming in on the D&D minis (merged with "anyone buying the new Mini's?")

See this is what bugs me the most. What a MINIATURES GAME has traditionally meant is that there is NO grid, distance is measured with a ruler, and Line of Sight is based on egtting down an d lookign at the figures.

There are some positive features of that too, like more accurate spell areas and diagonal movement.

Its that way in WH, WH40k, Chainmail, Battlesystem, etc.

WOTC says they're making a "miniatures game", but really they're making a grid game that could be played with any old token.
One difference with the "Entry Pack" game is that it is set indoors in a dungeon - that was a big shock to me until I realised that this was "Dungeons & Dragons" after all! ;)

Rest assured, the mass combat rules in the Miniatures Handbook (due out in about a fortnight) do not use a grid - you don't have to burn that ruler.

Cheers!

yes, i would like to affirm what ahs been said about the costs of wotc minis and those metal ones from reaper etc.

here in singapore, i pay around $17 for a booster, and this works out to be around $2 for a miniature. if i wanted to use any metal figures, i will need to fork out around $17 for a metal unpainted figure.

i tried to get into the painting hobby. then i found out that a brush costs $9, and i needed around 2-3 of different sizes. i needed paint, which costs around $5 for each colour. i had to file the pieces to remove those casting remnant pokey stuff.

factor in that i consistently got Cs and Ds for Art. factor in that im working hard to pay my mortgages, have time for family, etc etc.

the truth is, many of us lack the time and the talent for painting. also, if u happen to live overseas, the price difference per mini for wotc plastic stuff vs metal figs is too great, and i still have to invest money to get started with the equipment to paint.

lastly, yeah, very few people seem to talk about those jewels in the entry pack, with the dungeon tiles, huge map etc etc...

I don't mind minis, and use them (when I feel it appropriate) myself.

I just don't think the rules should ONLY support minis-oritented play, and should be written in a way to accomodate play without minis when appropriate.

Yes!

I couldn't agree more and I collect minis

OT here I like the new figures except that they scale irregularly with my Reaper and what not

I really enjoy using minis for gaming. However, I hate 3.5e's overemphasis on miniatures. I always saw minis as something that you could use or do without depending on the game.

With that said, I HATE WotC's new minis. Why? First, I hate the cheap plastic. Second, I hate the crappy paint jobs. I can see this not being an issue for people who don't like to paint, but painting is one of my hobbies, so the cheap paint job is a real turnoff for me. Third, I don't like style. The minis look like they (naturally) follow 3e/3.5e's artwork complete with mismatched armor and bondage/fetish clothing. Finally, I hate WotC's attempt to turn D&D into a mage knight ripoff, complete with random packaging.

I guess I'll stick with Reaper.
End Rant

Good rant. I especially like the bondage/fetish clothing bit-- spot on

I hate "dungeon punk" and the assorted "spyky bitz' that seem to have infested everything

The exceptions are rare, some Reaper and some Warmachine (which is more industrial punk really)

I thing the plastic ones are OK -- if I end up running a new campaign I am going to buy some boosters otherwise I think I will just order some Foundry minis --

This is actually one of the main problems... unless I start a new campaign, my zombies, orcs and the like will probably never be used. I know why the common creatures are also the low CR ones, but it's a bit of a bummer.

Curious? Is any one buying the new D&D plastic miniatues??

I just wanted to find out how many of you are buying and using the new D&D plastic miniatures? Are you getting alot of them or you just bought afew for kicks?

I will be buying none.

Combine the reported lackluster paint job with the fact that it will just support MORE moves towards mini games territory if lots of people support it, I am unmotivated.

Of course, I would point out that a thread on this issue was posted about 2 days ago, and it would not surprise me if some mod folded this one in.

Edit: Told ya! :p

...and INDEED I SHALL! :D

...and I'll say what I said Monday - if I could FIND 'em local, I'd buy some. I'll search again Friday, but they still aren't out. I want to buy a booster pack locally to look at them, before I commit to an Amazon order or such.

I don't know where you are located, but in the US they have been around, although they had sold out in many places. The good news is at least one of the distributors just got a restock, so the figs should should be back on the shelves shortly.

edit. BTW wouldn't you now be an October Moderator? :p
