Finally listened to my first podcast. An interesting interview, certainly. Side note: never, ever heard anyone before pronounce 'Ronin' as 'Roneen'; I've always heard it pronounced as rhymes with 'phone-in'.

A transliterated I in Japanese words is pronounced like the I in "happiness." Thus, ninja is NEEN-ja and ronin is roh-NEEN.

It's just that when using loan words from another language, using the language's own pronunciation is rather strange, as about 40% of the English language comes from French, and I don't hear people switching accents and pronunciation rules for those.

What I would like is for all you English language people to pronounce The Hague as Den Haag with a glottal G. Once you've got the hang of that, there's two glottal Gs in "van Gogh", so good luck with that

I dated a girl up here in Canada once who used proper spanish pronunciation when ordering at a Mexican restaurant.

It bordered on the ridiculous.

"I think I will have a Coke, a glas of water and the Boo-(rolled r)EEEto platter"

As a native spanish speaker (I was raised in Madrid) I find proper spanish pronunciation when speaking english anoying as hell. Pick a language and speak it. Blending them just bastardizes them both.

Just an opinion of course.

As an aside, I also lived in Mexico City for a couple of years (back in the early 80's) I never saw a burrito listed on a menu. Wikipedia states they are from Mexico but I have my doubts. I also never saw a hard shell taco or one made with a flour tortilla. It's all corn.

Yeah, but what English speaker says NEEN-ja?

Why not just call them sasuke. Pronounce sos-kay.
