Christmas is coming

I think I have a to second most everything here so far.

CAPES is a great little RPG, but I think it does take some mature people to play - ones who are comfortable story-telling. I don't think young kids would do well with this game. It's great fun, though. I still need to buy it myself. :)

If you like old-school style D&D, check out Castles and Crusades. It's a rules-light version of D&D, which is more like first edition in simplicity and feel.

HARP is also great. You can check out a free copy at www.harphq.com

My recommendations would be:

* Savage Worlds and the setting book Rippers
* Spycraft 2.0
* Babylon 5 and/or Star Trek RPG (but only if you love those shows)
* Conan RPG

I've heard good things about Mutants & Masterminds 2nd ed., but haven't seen it yet. The first edition stuff is good and you can probably find it cheap since 2nd ed. is out now.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay (2E). Like D&D, it's a fantasy RPG with many of the same races/monsters but that's where the similarities end. The mechanics are quite different and the setting grittier and darker. In some ways, it's simpler than 3.5 too.

As for boardgames, I'll second Heroscape which is good for 2 to 4 players. If you're after a brilliant game for only two players, try Knightmare Chess by Steve Jackson Games. Don't be fooled into thinking it's just another Chess variant. Although it uses Chess as its base, it takes it to a whole new level of wackiness.

Merry Christmas! ;)

What I'd like is any recommendations from the esteemed ENworld audience.

Spell Compendium from WOTC.
Spell Treasury from Malhavoc Press for Arcana Evolved - if you don't have it, invest in Arcana Evolved
Monte Cook Presents: Iron Heroes.
