Cinematic Asgard = Netheril [Epic LEvel High Magic Hoo-Hah]?

Y'know, I pulled out the old 2nd Edition FR Netheril books and was reminded that they in no way lived up to the promise of the setting --- high magic operating on a truly epic scale. Nope, it's mostly just a bunch of names and places and some fiddly rules options for "demi-magic" items. Almost no usable ideas about how to actually run a campaign in the setting.

And then I see those trailers for Thor and think, that's how it's done. Awesome heroes from a floating city travel across multiple planes, laying down the smack on an epic scale, and then they head back to the floating city and relax at the mother of all mead-halls.

Asgard is pretty much Hestavar and Celestia smushed together, and i think that is the best way to describe how powerful your level 20+ character is in relation to everyone else....godlike. They still have some limitations but they kick alot of butt and make it look easy.

Yeah, Thor does epic right.

after seeing the movie myfriends said "That is an epic level fighter"

[sblock=just in case]
With his magic armor and his magic weapon (maybe magic neck slot item...teh he) he stands against everything and nothing stands against him...

but in street cloths and no magic, he runs through a dozen paragon level soldiers... then fights and beats a paragon solo solder on his own

[/sblock]

the quastion my friend asked was if a 30 level fighter, Pit fighter, demi god with no items at all could fight through a few 12th or 13th level encounters solo...

With no armor, maybe, that would give him an AC of about 25 plus dex, so not bad for that level.

His attacks would be better, but low crits, so I do not see why not, especially with a few utility buffs.

Again, just going off the trailers and online spoilers, it's a great example of how an adventuring party operates on a different scale up around 25th level. Your tavern is a floating city in extradimensional space. The minions you plow through are 15 foot tall frost giants. Your dungeon is another plane of existence.

By the way, I looked at that old Netheril boxed set some more. Amazing how game design has changed. That box contains absolutely no advice or ideas as to how or why one would ever actually run a campaign in that setting --- just page after page of historical notes. Take the basic ideas --- epic level PCs, heavy emphasis on the arcane, the first Golden Age of a points of light setting --- and there's some good stuff there.

Pardon the digression, but that's sort of the problem with Council of Wyrms, too --- awesome idea (albeit not well-supported by the game mechanics of that era), but seriously, how do I make a campaign out of this?
