CITY OF BRASS - the Web-Based RPG App Kickstarter Launches!

The City of Brass, the multi-system online campaign management suite, has launched its Kickstarter. "The City of Brass is a fully-featured web app designed to manage the mechanics of pen-and-paper roleplaying games, allowing you to focus on what matters: playing that game. We bring together your characters, monsters, NPCs, setting, adventure, and campaign, allowing you to easily manage all these elements in a single location, from any device, anytime, and for any game system!" The project is seeking $5,000 over the next month, and has stretch goals for Pathfinder, W.O.I.N., Fate, and 13th Age. The suite as a whole incorporates world builder, story builder, campaign manager, character and monster creators, and so on.

Question: if you are a GM, would all of your players need to subscribe in order to view the info (e.g. characters, etc). Or will a GMs subscription include player access?

LucasC, can you talk a bit about dungeon masters' options when they decide to leave your service? What kind of export tools will you provide?

I asked a few of the questions noted above on their pre-launch kickstarter page which they answered in their latest newsletter.
Probably a good idea to add these to the Kickstarter page FAQ, but I will copy them below for us here:

Q&A
I cannot add FAQs to the Kickstarter page until after it goes live, but here are answers to some of the questions that came in over the last few days.

Q. How much will The City of Brass cost?
A. Our post-launch subscription costs are not yet final. One of the purposes of beta is to validate our cost estimates. We will announce the prices as soon as we can.

Q. Can you export content?
A. Not yet, but we intend to develop a feature to export your content to PDF. It will not be ready prior to beta.

Q. Do all players require a subscription or just the GM?
A. Everyone that uses The City of Brass is required to have their own account. With the exception of World Builder Districts, content is visible only to those with active subscriptions.

Q. Are their plans for a shopfront with purchasable content?
A. Absolutely. This will be a future enhancement, however, and not ready prior to launch. In the interim, publishers wishing to have content available in The City of Brass should contact me directly and we can discuss options.

Q. Can we share data with others and/or create community content?
A. Our intention is to build a Community Contribution center where The City of Brass users can create and share content. Development on this has not yet begun, and will not occur until after beta.

Q. What about copyright issues?
A. To use The City of Brass you must agree to our Terms of Service, including refraining from using intellectual property that does not belong to you. We will address alleged copyright violations on a case-by-case basis.

Q. Will there be examples of actual content?
A. In some cases yes. Some World Builder districts, for example, can be viewed today by visiting https://thecityofbrass.com/wb. A selection of spells, feats, abilities, and creatures will be available in the Stock Rules engine, and we intend to provide some adventures, but are working through the delivery system for them.

Q. Is The City of Brass a Virtual Table Top?
A. No.

I'll add a bit to the FAQs.

It's not necessary for everyone to be using The City of Brass, but it certainly adds to the experience. GMs will spend a lot of time in Story Builder and Entity Builder, putting together their adventures and challenges, and most of this work will never be shared with players anyhow. Also, World Builder settings can be viewed by anyone, with our without an account. I think, though, that your players will find the system offers them an excellent resource as well and our goal is to keep the subscription charges reasonable enough that no one, GM or player, is put out by the cost.

As it relates to data exporting... this is an area we have discussed at some length. We intend to bring a PDF export feature to The City of Brass, though we have no timeline for it. If exporting data and/or offline content are critically important to you, then The City of Brass may not be the right system for you. Our vision is and focus is on the delivery of exception content through the web. I'd hate for anyone to jump aboard and be unhappy because of this. Even if you do pass, after we go live you can try it out for 30 days at no cost and decide if it's worth what we're asking given these constraints.

Looks like this will fund in the next day or two, even despite launching at the weekend. Congratulations!

This looks cool, and I wish you the best. But unless this becomes something like Spotify for RPG content, I can't justify a sub for every one of my players. A lot of online rpg services demand cost per player, as opposed to cost per group. If there was a group option, or a free version, I'd be all for this. But if my players won't use it, I can't justify a pledge. Now, if this changes I'll pledge SO FAST. But... For now, best of luck!

I backed at the level that will give a one year subscription when the subscription begins... whenever that will be. :)

This is the first online campaign manager tool that actually looks easy for me to use without a lot of headaches to deal with a learning curve. The ease of usability is what I've been wanting and it seems like this one will give that to me.
