City tiles master set printing problems?

Has anyone else been disappointed at the printing quality of the city tiles master set?

I received mine today and its going straight back to Amazon for a replacement. Roughly a half to a third of the tiles have very washed out colours and the black areas are speckled. None of my other tile sets have any similar issues.

Is this a widespread problem or did I get a rogue set?

Sounds like you got a rogue set. My friend picked up two copies and his are just fine. No color difference with my Streets of Shadow tiles.

You might want to contact Wizards' customer service about it, too.

Well the first lot went back to Amazon and as they would only refund and not replace the item I got a replacement set from another seller in the hopes that I would get a good batch. Sadly my new set has many of the same faults as the last lot.

Here is a comparison between two tiles from the same set. On one tile the black is nice and solid, on the other it is faded and speckled.

Am I the only one getting tiles like this?

Many thanks for posting this thread. Luckily I caught it before hitting my order button on Amazon. I got no less than 3 (!) copies of the original city set, but looking at Thanee's images of the new city set there's plenty to complement these.

Unfortunately, reports are accumulating as to the sub par quality of the new set. I refer you to e.g. this discussion here:

I bought me a copy of the City Tile Master set, mainly to get more copies of the rooftops... And what do I find? No actual tiles of the rooftops. Nope, they're not punchable tiles, they're printed on the top and bottom of the box, in a non-movable layout.

So now I have to cut the box apart if I want something more than a narrow alley with buildings on either side. And what happened? Now I have a bunch of nice tiles and several raged-edged ones, some of which are now peeling!! I realize we were given several new tile groups BUT, the ONE group of tiles I really wanted out of it are now already falling apart...

I'm seriously disappointed with this purchase and would have returned it straight away if the shop I bought it from had a return policy. It will probably be my last Wizards purchase as it's seriously soured me.

Could we please get more feedback from people who bought this tile set, to better assess whether these are one-off production problems or inherent to the set. Thank you.

Several of my tiles are the same way as in your picture. None of them are peeling yet as Windjammer reported. It's not a new issue, I have seen older tile sets that had the same speckled look, so I didn't make a big fuss about it... it happens when the printer is running a bit low on ink because the paper has a rough texture to it.

So, one person with defective product(who dealt with it right and returned the defective product), and someone else who wanted rooftop tiles and since the City set doesn't have those, he cut apart the box and the materials are falling apart after he cut them apart.

Doesn't sound like anything related at all to me.

And that wasn't really much of a discussion that someone linked.

Thanks for the feedback. Having worked as a printer technician for a while I was well aware of the cause but had not seen it on any of the previous tile sets.

I've resorted to using a black permanent marker on some of the more faded tiles. Not something I wanted to do but I'd rather have tiles to play with than no tiles at all.

That should at least help define the walls and such. This city set is one of the worst examples of the phenomenon that I've seen... my tiles are as bad as yours are, and maybe a lot of them were printed the same way.

I was fortunate enough to receive them as a gift from one of my players (that I dm for). I didn't see any printer errors. I did notice that many of the tiles were derivative of older tiles based on a cityscape. That said, there were also a lot of new tiles as well.

Overall great product (great gift).

I hope WotC will own up to their errors for any faultly products.

I got the city tiles last week. Observations:

1) there seem to be 2 different printing 'depths' for the set, both in the black margin and the color of the 'stone walkways'. I don't think this is a 'problem' in production, but rather a difference in print on on the sides

2) this is hardly worrisone to me. I doubt my players would notice or care the slight variation.

3) I generally don't 'love' the set anyway. It is way less usefull (for me) than the 'dungeon' essentials set. Hard to describe, but it does not seem easy to make a lot of usable buildings and streets with the set.

Even still, in my opinion it was worth what I paid, and not worth complaining about
