Clanggedin Prestige Class

I could be totally off on this idea but:
The CR is used to (well supposedly anyhow  depending on how accurate you feel the CR is) gauge how well matched an encounter is for "an average party of 4 at that level" and use up @20-25% of the parties resources, right?

So if this is True then couldn't you just set the encounter for an individual right at a CR matching their Character level?

(And as the DM if you have under rated the CR then you could always sneak another something in there when they aren't looking if it was too easy, but only if you can do it sneakily enough! hehe)
I would imagine since death is a possibilty, but you Do (in theory) want the pc to succeed that they should be thrashed to within an inch of their life and be truly afraid of dying when they strike that "killer blow!"

Also, did I missunderstand or did you say that their axe will be sundered? So do they have to fight unarmed?

Hey all.

Ok, here are a few things.

1) CR:

In regards to the CR, yes the DM aspect of the ritual notes are considering a group of petitioners as this is how I see it being done most of the time in a Dwarven clan. There are many followers of Clangeddin in a clan and many who would seek the prestige and rank of being an Alaghor.

For a specific instant in a game where it is ONLY 1 petitioner, then you have to use the DM's common sense. What can a Alaghor petitioner solo? Even if it means using 100% of their expendable resources? GENERALLY, and I agree with paulewaug that CR's dont always mean sqaut (but I am hopeful that 3.5E Helps to fix this somewhat), but generally if a CR is meant for an iconic party of 4 (Cleric, Wizard, Rogue, Fighter) and you have only 1 then I find that you tend to need to lower the CR by around 3-4. So in this particular case a CR matching the Petitioner should suffice. However, keep in mind that it requires DM common sense. Exaple: An 9th level Clr5/Ftr4 petitioner is not going to be able to face down a CR9 Demon alone.

However, as a DM you can always say that the PC is a petitioner, but due to the mechanics of the how the clan works the Player is only one of many petitioners. The more petitioners the more of a Roleplaying aspect it will be, especially if some of the NPC petitioners die or are cast out. It will make it all that much more memorable to the Player, knowing that they actually participated in something grand and came out of it ahead.

2) The Axe:
It was a misread or I was not clear enough. The petitioner must sacrifice an Axe they have crafted themselves. It does not mean they cannot have many more axes, just that they have to sacrifice one of their own making.

If you really want to make this more of a cost to the petitioner (asside from forcing them to take ranks in Craft (Weaponsmith)) then require it to be a Masterwork Axe of their own creation.

Hope that helps clarify things. Thanks for the compliments. I think the joint effort on this is turning out quite nicely. Keep up the work all. If there are any more questions please feel free to ask.

That about clears it up for me. I like the idea about other petitioners, because it gives the chance to feel as if you were part of something biggger. Also, most clerics of Clanggeddin will try to become Alaghors, but if you can't prove your worth you can't achive the "Prestige" of one.
I,ve got one more point to add though. Maybe the Alaghor Charm (PrC level bonus to charisma checks) should work as well in intimidate checks against Giants. What do you guys think?
Unless anybody is going to raise any additional points, I think this PrC is about ready. Tecnik's writeup (2nd post on the thread) is the final one. I want to thank everybody who helped me with this, specially Khaliss, Paulewag, and Technik. This Prestige class is as much yours as anybody's.

What I'd like to know is how much damage the Ranger8/Alaghor9 is laying against a Fire Giant with the Ultimate Clanggeddin Fighting Techniques ( Power Critical Feat). In rage of course :D . assume judicious use of power attack as well.

D'oh, I had written up a Clangeddin Templar (Rgr10/Ala10) with 2wf fighting feats and some favored enemy feats from MoW, but my post got erased when I logged in! Agh! He had +8 damage against giants (per swing!).

Anyway, I edited the second post so it is just the prc.
