Clarification - Sorcerer/Archmage and High Arcana

Arcane Fire as a Sorcerer? ;)

Take Orb of Force than you have all the Arcane Fire you'll ever need... and it can even hit ethereal/incorporeal targets.

You know that is true. I love Orb of Force and was even going to buy a Ring of Wizardry IV to double my 4th level spells. I guess Arcane Fire is out. Though it is kinda sad. I love the name of it. Sounds so powerful.

Arcane Fire is still useful for those lewer level spells

Uhm... 3rd level spell + 4th level Archmage + Arcane Fire = 7d6 damage at 22nd level. ;)

I have no idea what you are trying to prove or what your point is with that statement. Your math is right but I don't see what that has to do with Arcane Fire being useful for lower level spells.

That's just not worth spending a High Arcana on, that's all.

If you really have to resort to using low-level slots for damage, you can still cast Magic Missile. ;)

I always thought it was quite useful for 0-level spells. 4d6 points of non SR, non elemental damage as a ranged touch attack. Seems like a good use for those 0-level slots to me.

depends what the other spells the Sorcerer knows are.

Just need to clarify something.

When a sorcerer takes levels in archmage and picks his high arcana abilities, the "Spell Slot" lost to gain the ability is from Spells Known not Spells/day correct?

No. The archmage loses one spell slot. This is not an ambiguous term.

Spell Slots: The various character class tables show how many spells of each level a character can cast per day. These openings for daily spells are called spell slots.

The Orb spells are pretty darn brutal (and maybe broken).

Arcane Fire is still useful even if you have the Orb spells.

Arcane Fire is a Supernatural ability, so you don't have to worry about concentration, verbal and somatic components, etc. Arcane Fire has greater range (600'). Arcane Fire is raw magical energy, so its untyped.

For what's it worth, I would take the 5th level of Archmage. To get the extra d6 of Arcane Fire. For abilitiies, I'd either take Arcane Reach or Mastery of Counterspelling.
