Pathfinder 1E Clark Peterson supporting Pathfinder?

Clark Peterson isn't your typical 3PP changing gears, however. Clark was pretty much the 4e standard bearer of the 3PPs. Prior to that, Necromancer's stuff was some of (and still is) the mostly well-regarded 3rd-party material produced for 3e.

Given the degree to which Mr. Peterson felt the GSL burned 3PPs, I think he's taken a pretty diplomatic stance when speaking about Pathfinder or 4e, both historically as well as now.

Was their a 4e slight in his comments? Probably. However, it's a smaller slight than when a 3PP switches gears to Pathfinder and people show up and start throwing out posts attempting to marginalize those people's opinions. That seems to happen every time someone announces support for Pathfinder -- and I do notice.

From what I can tell, both Pathfinder and 4e are doing well. WotC's business plan for 4e does not include, in any significant way, healthy 3PP support. A 3PP shifting support to a company whose business plan does include active 3PP support is hardly surprising, nor is it a betrayal of 4e fandom.

Not really what I'm getting at.

It'd just be refreshing if more people could support Pathfinder without immidiately having to feel they need to defend it right out the gates and claim it's the True Spirit of D&D.

Look Pathfinder is cool and all - I play it! - but the way people feel the need to neverendingly claim it's the "real D&D" makes you the nerd equivilant of that guy that never shuts the hell up about how much he loves America. It's also kinda funny, because I never see people who enjoy 4e quote constantly how it's the True Spirit of D&D. Enjoy the games you enjoy. Needing to reaffirm that it's "TRUE D&D" doesn't make the game sound better, it makes you sound more pandering.

Wait, what?! Standard bearer of 4e 3pp??

Yeah, he was. There was no single individual more supportive of 4e and the GSL than Clark going into the affair. He was a very vocal cheerleader for the idea of publishers sticking with the current edition of Dungeons and Dragons for the sake of the game and the legacy of the game. He was constantly urging patience with WotC and encouraging WotC to put out a good license. It is a sign of how badly WotC bungled the whole thing that they lost him.

That's not what he said.

He said "Pathfinder is the game that has the soul of what D&D was".

My bolding above is how I take his statement. Pathfinder does have the soul of the prior edition of D&D, it's a direct modification of that game. That's one reason I do not prefer it over my game of choice. But other people do, and we're all happy to have a game we like to play.

This is great news for Pathfinder fans.

I don't know Byron...I mean isn't this the same guy who basically pledged his undying support for 4E right up until the GSL turned things sour? It seems pretty fair weather of him to support Pathfinder all of a sudden.

Not that I'm complaining *looks at plethora of Necromancer Games material of shelf*...

Folks, I'll be blunt. If you turn this thread into an edition war or continue insulting one another, you'll be getting time off. Stop now, please.

Funny how you decided to edit/warn/infract/nuke from orbit posts but left aDannager's initial flamebait in place but hey, it's the legendary non-biased EnWorld moderation at hard work.

I think our "don't call out a mod decision on the boards" rule is fairly unambiguous. It even applies when you think you're right. Umbran's applied the appropriate measure, but I'm leaving this in here to remind folks that there are no exceptions to that rule. - Morrus.

I also hope that if or when he comes back he produces new stuff and not, for example, a rehash of RAPPAN ATHUK. I have the Reloaded boxed set and it's Awesome! But I don't want a Pathfinder version of it. The existing version is easy enough to convert to Pathfinder.

So basically if Clark is reading this, something as cool as City of Brass or RAPPAN ATHUK, but different.

And Awesome. Can't forget Awesome.
