Class: "just" level-dependent special abilities.

Here's my current thinking about classes. The basic idea is that if you take character level N in a class, you get the abilities of the Nth level of that class.

(Note: More than likely, this is either a 4e or a house rule thread. If it needs to be moved, feel free.)

Hit die: d4 + some number. Example: wizards: d4+0, bards: d4+1, cleric: d4+2, fighter: d4+3, barbarian: d4+4
BAB: Fractional. Ranging up to an entire +1
Spells: Given as special abilities.

Special Abilities: Every level, each class gets a special ability. (Note: This isn't curent the case, but should be if this system is used, or else some levels will never be taken.... aka fighter 3)

Leveling: When an N-level character takes his N+1th level, he takes the special abilities due to the class he takes at level N+1, or those of a lesser level of that class.

Example: In 3e, Fighters get a bonus feat at 4th level, and this is allowed to be weapon specialization. In this system, any character who takes his fourth level as fighter can take weapon specialization that level. Other prerequisites still apply.

How spells factor in: Full-casters, as an example, get at least one new spell each level. When taking a level of that class, look at the new spells/day and spells/known given upon getting level N+1. If the caster takes that level, he will have those spells.

Example: Smashey the 5th level bararian discovers that he has the blood of ancient dragons in him. He turns inward, and his sixth level is in sorcerer. He can then cast 1 2nd and 3 3rd level spells per day, and knows one cantrip and one 3rd level spell. His BAB increases by a fraction 0.5, which does not affect his total.

If ozun had instead steadied his martial prowness and taken fighter 6, he could access any fighter-only feat requiring sixth level or lower.

Obvously, the caster levels would need to be redeisnged for this to work, but I believe it allows for the Gish-type character to work, even if it is a bit unorthodox. It makes it easy for a Barbarian to get weapon spec and even a couple ranger abilities. Most importantly, it gives all charactes access to higher-level abilities.
