Class skill/cross class skill

If I'm a 1st level Monk, and takes a Figther level as my 2nd, is Tumble still considered a class skill when I'm placing the new skillpoints? What would Max ranks in Tumble be?

I coulndn't fint it in the SRD, but the rules are (taken from memory):
  • Tumble would be cross-class, as it is not on the Fighter class skill list. That means double price when buying ranks.
  • But it is considered a class skill for the purpose of max rank (unless it is exclusive). Thus max rank for a Mon1/Ftr1 is 5.

I don't remember why it works like this, but it has been discussed several times before on the boards.

That's right, because you are buying skill ranks as a fighter, not as a monk.

True, because max rank is calculated by character level, not by individual class levels. You could invent a house rule that the max rank of each and every skill is calculated by class levels, but that would mean a lot of bookceeping...

Here is a simple way to remember class skill vs. cross class skill when you are multiclassed.

Max ranks in class skills are affected by character level. This being the case any skill that is a class skill for any class you belong to is a class skill for the purposes of max ranks.

Purchase price of skill points is affected by class level. This means that when you earn skill points, those points belong to a specific class and only that classes skills cost 1 point/rank all others are 2 points/rank.

This is one of the places where chr lvl vs. cls lvl is very important.

It works that way so that you can't do crap like take 1 level of Rogue to get Disable Device or something, and then abandon Rogue and go fighter while continuing to dump points in your Disable Device skill.

YES, you can do it, but it's cross class so you can't borg out the skill as easilly.
