claws + monk class damage

First Post
Got a question, If I have a creature that does 1d6 claw damage and now I give him a level of monk (who does a d6 of damage)

does this guy do d8 damage or 2 d6.

What if I had a monster who did d4 damage. Is there a universal rule for this?

unarmed damage is not just punching, it's using kness, elbows and all body parts. So, I'm not sure if having claws would increase your damage at all.

In that case he has 2 options. 1d6 claw damage, or 1d6 unarmed attack damage :-)

If he had 4 levels of monk, he could do 1d8 damage.

I don't believe that there are any special rules covering what happens if a monster takes monk levels, but I don't see how it would be different than a human with monk levels that has to choose between unarmed attacks and attacks with his dagger.

No, It seems to me that it should stack somehow. after all wouldn't a monk be beter at using his claws then an ordinary monster.

A Kama, Nunchaku, or saigham. (probably all spelled wrong) act like a monks 'natural' weapons. They can use them as if unarmed. But they don't add to damage at all. Neither does a monk with a dagger, or sword, or gauntlets. So I don't see having claws being all that different.

I ruled that having claws will allow a monk to do Slashing/Piercing damage instead of of Bludgeoning damage if they wish, and to use the threat range of the claws instead of their fist (normally it is the same as their fists, but not always).

It does not otherwise affect their unarmed attacks.

Yep.

I came to the same exact decision. As far as allowing them to convert to slashing/piercing, I mean.

Though I hadn't thought to add in the threat range potential clause. I'll toss that in too. Albeit, I agree it won't come up much, if ever. Monk Tarrasque anyone? ;)

It came up in my Dragonstar game, where the monk had keenblade claw implants. :)
