Claws of the Vampire (CotV):
Q: Let's say you are multiclass psychic warrior/monk, and your unarmed damage is 1d12. You manifest CotV. How would the damge and healing work?
A1: I'd rule that if a character is capable of making an unarmed attack that dishes out more than 1d8 damage -- such as the monk in our example who does 1d12 -- they should roll a seperate d8 to determine the healing aspect from CotV.
Note 1: This equates to, yes, if you do more unarmed damage than CotV's normal 1d8, you do get to capitalize on that. But, you still only get 1d8 back in healing.
Note 2: That was my suggestion that Bruce agreed was an option. He also said another approach was...
A2: That, or to speed things up, just roll the d12, and heal back the base damage up to a total of 8 points. Yeah, this is a slight advantage to the monk (because 9,10,11, and 12 all count as 8 ), but perhaps the time saved in not rolling an extra die is worth it.
Q: Does CotV heal back the total damage you dish out, including strength, feat bonuses, etc. or just the base d8?
A: CotV heals back only the base damage done by the power, not strength or other modifiers. The way this power gets better is when used on multiple "iterative" attacks as a character levels.
Q: Is the power scaling variant [from ITCK] supposed to work with the Claw type powers?
A: CotV gives you a psionically enhanced attack that deals damage and does not, in and of itself, do damage. Hence power scaling would not work with the 'Claws' power.
