Cleave

When you cleave you deal damage to those unfortunate bystanders equal to your str mod. Is extra damage like from magic weapons or weapon training also added in or is strictly str mod?

A good question really.

My interpretation is that you only get extra damage from magic weapons, weapon training, etc when you do [W] damage. Since you don't do [W] damage with cleave, my answer would be no.

Hang on..................Cleaving with a normal weapon is an AOE attack?

Silly has been redefined.

Not really an AOE attack. When you cleave you basically take a big sweeping blow that damages an enemy adjacent to the primary enemy you targeted with your attack.

Not at all!

IMO, this cleave models what a "cleave" really is far better: the residual damage you get from swinging hard.

Cleave hits one enemy in melee range with [W] + STR damage, then hits one other enemy adjacent to you with STR damage.

I don't think weapon bonuses apply if [W] isn't present.

I don't see anything describing cleaving as an AoE attack.

The sillyness is that, IIRC, there's an attack the first creature, but the second is damaged automatically without taking its AC into consideration.

So would you compare the original value to the new target's AC or roll again? Either adds an additional level of complexity for a miniscule ammount of damage. 4e already has plenty of "if miss" damage, this isn't very different.

Awesome - - Quick, Filbert! Use your shift power to move that Kobold wearing an adult diaper so it's adjacent to the red dragon!

As I read it the damage is automatic, which is indeed silly (when you look at it from any point of view OTHER than the player playing the fighter, of course), but it's fast at least. And not that much damage that it's gonna do a lot of difference.
