Clerics and Cure Spells

Eccles

Ragged idiot in a trilby.
Clerics can freely 'dump' one of their existing spells in favour of a 'Cure' spell of the same level.

My questions are:

1. Would this include "Heal" spells and the like, or only those that are exclusively called "cure..."?

2. If a cleric 'dumps' a 9th level spell, could he or she cast an empowered, empowered, empowered cure spell on the fly?

Cheers!

1. No. The spell must have "cure" in the title. That's one reason why cure blindness/deafness got changed to remove blindness/deafness, et al.

2. Yes. See p78, second column, "Spontaneous Casting and Metamagic Feats."

I was pondering just allowing them to dump any spell (sans domain) for 1d8/lvl in healing ... so a 7th spell could be dumped for 7d8 in healing.

Because clerics are underpowered or something?

I'm not seeing the need.

Agreed. And they can still dump that 7th level spell if they want, they just can't replace it with anything bigger than Cure Critical Wounds.

I wouldn't change anything. It works well enough as is, IMO.

nope ... just to be different, I think overall it's a bit weaker than the standard (and the very first time I read it I thought it was just for a d8  )

7d8: avg 24 (burn a 7th lvl spell)

4d8+13: avg 29 (burn a 7th lvl spell, and if corwin is correct [edit: he is! ... so who didn't mix up a few things the first time they read thru the PHb :P], have a max of cure critical)

Eh. If a cleric ends up burning his high-level slots for cure frequently, I just see that as a reason to recomend Empower Spell.

That said, I don't see that it would cause any great harm to (for example) give all clerics the ability to Empower their cure spells if they want, either.

you people in co-hoes are just weird!;)

when I first thought of it (how long ago did 3e come out?) I think I might have had an argument ... but now I got nuthin, and no reasons.
