Clerics and their Holy Symbols

Part of the original reason why I started question/thread was because I wanted to get an idea/opinion from everyone in reagrds to the missing Holy Symbol as my players started off as slaves aboard a ship.
They have since escaped captivity and have made their way to an island.
I allowed them to make very rough wooden holy symbols and told them it would only be counted as a Divine Focus for spells under 3rd level. This wasn't really a problem as they haven't even gotten 2nd level spells yet.
Basically I had them make Craft Checks (I allowed this to be untrained in this case) and then told them they would have to forgoe a day's spell activity, instead pouring that "holy energy" into theri symbols, so empowering their very rough symbols into very rough Holy Symbols.
