Clubhouse: The Shearing Pen

Using the redcap example, the elder redcap is an "average" specimen of a 12 HD advancement of a young redcap. "Average" is defined as having a statblock published in one of the texts. This redcap could be advanced to 20 HD, but since the statblock of the "average" specimen is not CR 18, it does not qualify as a base creature.

But if the elder redcap were, hypothetically, CR 18, it would be legal? I'd tell you what I have in mind, but I want it to stay private.

And don't count me as having returned yet. I'm just crashing at my cousin's house for the night, and I don't have any books.

Yes, it sounds legal in theory. Please send me an e-mail to confirm the exact monster if you don't want to waste your time working on something that I will turn around and judge illegal.

Roll randomly, yes. Chart, no. The dragons have more limited choices, so PJSlavner may have a chart of sorts burned into his brain, which is why he has no cells left over to process that Arborea is not a FFA Arena.

Since Komodo expressed an interest in making a general before running off to school, I'm extending the deadline to when a CR 12 monster enters the battle.

I'm also proclaiming the Abyssal Arena FFA again until Mr. Prez shows up.

That's what I was afraid of. That explains why Fang V has such a useless selection of spells. :)

It could be worse. I was running an immoth, which casts spells as a level 12 sorcerer, and I rolled spells like jump and magic weapon, and it can fly and its natural weapons are like magic. It did not get much better from there.

After seeing this, "Dave does not recognize the spell (rolled 26 Spellcraft check)." It made me think how stupidly the Spellcraft skill really is written. Dave had some spell (or spell-like ability) cast on him. Note the following:

1. Identify the spell being cast: DC 15+spell level
2. Identify the spell in place: DC 20+spell level
3. Identify the spell after failing the save: DC 25+spell level

Can Dave do any of the above? I personally don't think that in this particular case #3 applies (it was an area effect spell, not a targeted spell). But, I don't see any reason why Dave wouldn't get two separate spellcraft checks for #1 and #2 (it's not instantaneous and has a visible effect).
