On Deck

I had an idea. Not for this version of the BoAA perhaps, but maybe the next or not. Just thought I'd toss it out there before I forget.

How about having an "on deck" circle. On the other side of the wall of force is a room with the next opponent. So, present combatants (both of them actually) will be able to see but not communicate with the next combatant for each side. I think the one-way viewing is slightly to the advantage of the new combatant, despite the required move action to enter. I think that the next combatant would enter the On Deck Circle (ODS) as soon as the previous one leaves it. Any movements/actions taken in the ODS would not be noticeable by the current combatants. You could also have each ODS be visible to the other. The purpose of these being visible is that present combatants may have a chance for a relevant knowledge check and perhaps some reasonable tactical preparations. For example, knowing that a red dragon is coming, a current combatant may soak up a couple of attacks just to get a resist energy (fire) in place before mauling his current opponent.

And then I was thinking, why not let the combatants start taking actions immediately, such as buffing? Would that be too much of an advantage or what that just actually be allowing a creature to use its abilities normally? Note that neither side knows how long they will have, so buffing 1 round/level spells does have its risks. It's always bothered me that no buffing time is allowed. Although I think dragons will benefit from it, too, I think the lack of buffing benefits dragons the most because they typically have the best natural defenses anyway.

I like this a lot, but probably more for the next incarnation of the battle, where you will be able to rearrange your lineup for each CR. We could vote on whether we want to include it going forward once the quarterfinal round is over.

Btw, I just added house rules for falling objects, so feel free to have your kamikaze dragons drop on top of their opponents and do a max of 20d6 damage.

Maybe if you put some limits on the buffing. Personal only, no summoning - as bad as the LG arena is now, having the entire dream team appear "as your next opponent" could hardly be seen as an improvement. Maybe one round of buffing?

I would prefer that the wall of force be one way - that way a creature with flyby attack (for example) would not have to waste a move action just to enter the arena unless they so desired - making it teleport OR conventional entry (still at 0z).

I like some buffing time. Since the on-deck combatant doesn't really know how long the fight will take, that should keep them on their toes so they don't pile out their short-duration buffs too early (but it'd be an interesting guessing game). I like giving the spellcast capable combatants more of a chance. Right now it seems like either you get lucky (or canny, like LM) and get plenty of time for buffing, or you have no chance at all and get your tiny-BAB self mauled.

This might make the infernals and celestials (somewhat) better matched against the dragons, for instance, since they'd have a chance to put up their (un)holy auras and invisibilities and such. All the kind of things that in a "normal" encounter they could prep for.

Later thought: if we wanted to have a "Exhibition Arena" to try out new rules, I'd be up for running one of the sides. Maybe we could choose a CR that is likely to have buffs, grab two alignments to test with, choose three combatants each and give it a shot. We could use the CR-adjustments currently in use in the ToC if desired.
