CN vs. N: Chaotic Neutral Victorious!

OOC: No problem, I want to get this right as well for later, which is why I need to revisit it one more time.

Johnny descended at a 45 degree angle from 85N10E40Z to 45N15E. I said that it cost Johnny 30 feet of movement, and you said it cost him 60.

I believe the right answer is 40 feet of movement. Just travelling 8 squares diagonally is 60 feet, so descending 40 feet at double speed should save Johnny 20 feet in movement costs, thus 60-20 = 40 feet. Right?

OOC: I'd agree that you can move double speed descending. To me, that means you speed only half speed moving down. Going from 10Z to 0Z costs you 5ft of movement. It does not speed up lateral movement. So, going from 85N10E to 45N15E requires 40ft of lateral movement. There's no way that it should be any quicker. Going from 40Z to 0Z requires an additional 20ft of movement because you essentially move at double speed. If just moving down doubles your speed laterally as well, then you could also move from 85N10E5Z to 45N15E0Z with 20ft of movement. I find that wrong. I agree that there might be some logic to that thought, but it creates problems that have no solutions. What's the minimum angle? More importantly, who really wants to compute that angle? I think just counting height at half-cost models the double speed well enough.

Why do you subtract 20? The movement is 40 across and 40/2=20 down. That's 60 total. I don't know where you are getting the secondary subtraction of 20 from. If you are counting the horizontal and vertical movement together so that the speed reduction also applies to the horizontal movement, that's what I'm saying is wrong. The speed reduction is only for the downward vector, IMO. Otherwise, you get some really weird conditions as I've stated above.

If Johnny traveled from 0N0E0Z to 40N40E0Z, it would cost 60 feet in diagonal movement, not 80. You can't take the two vectors and add them together. So I am subtracting half of the downward vector (20) from the normal movement (60) to get 40.

You're right. I'm sick right now, so I blame it on clogged up sinuses. Now I know what you mean by diagonal movement. I apologize for the digression, and now I totally agree. At least it's not 30ft. :)

OOC: Sorry to hear that, hope you get better.

Johnny repositions back to 10N15E25Z. The combat resumes.

Round 547: Johnny flies directly down to 10N15E0Z (15 feet), then moves east to 10N25E (10 feet), attacks, then flies up to 10N25E30Z. Nim dodges the attack. (Rolled 25)

OOC: It was the worst sinus infection I've ever had. Everything was aching so bad, it hurt to refocus my eyes. Not kidding. Anyway, now I'm taking massive amounts of antibiotics, starting yesterday, and already I'm feeling better.

Nim has no chance of ever hitting Johnny who will never come within his reach, so he will not just shoot for the draw, but obtain it. Talk about confidence in a construct. Nim will go on total defense. That puts his AC at 34 if I reckon correctly (24 + 1 haste +1 dodge +2 cat's grace +6 total defese due to Tumble).

General I2K is not too happy about having such an interesting and cool combatant have to go for the draw. Feel free to time compress as long as Johnny keeps doing the spring attack thing and staying out of reach.

OOC: I had a sinus headache on the plane coming back from Europe many years ago. It lasted for a week.

Round 548: Johnny hits for 11. (Rolled 35) Nim has 49 hp left.

Round 549: Johnny hits for 15. (Rolled 36) Nim has 34 hp left.

Round 550: Johnny misses.

Round 551: Johnny misses.

Round 552: Johnny misses.

Round 553: Johnny misses.

Round 554: Johnny misses! Draw!

Next up for CN in round 554: a crystalline troll. (MM III) We'll switch.

An 11 foot tall bipedal creature moves to 55N20E and waits attentively. It has long, ungainly arms and legs. Its hide glimmers faintly, reflecting and refracting the light in the arena.

Next up for N in round 555: a skeletal dragon. (Draconomicon) PJS will fight with the troll.

The skeleton of a huge black dragon charges into the arena 55N40E and attacks with a bite. Hopefully, well, actually not hopefully 'cause Blackie really doesn't think at all, much less hope; anyway, hopefully the troll will become shaken.

OOC: I note humorously that on the top of page 193 it says "or flies overhead." I almost had Blackie flying around the arena.
