Colossal D&D Miniatures News!

Three Words: Purple Worm fig.

Years ago, I was poking around on the miniatures shelves at my gaming store. They had a box of loose figs, from various packs that had come over from hanging on the pegs for a long time. These were lead figs, btw.

Among them were a bunch of segments for a purple worm figure, that some company (Grenadier maybe?) had made, on the theory that you would buy the 'head and tail' pack, and one or more 'segment' packs and assemble your own purple worm.

Apparently, someone had bought the supply of 'head and tail' packs, and left about six 'segment' packs to languish. I bought all the loose segments, and bought a 'head and tail' pack from the manufacturer.

Eventually, glued them all together and painted the purple worm appropriately. The critter is better than a foot long, and probably weighs 2 or 3 pounds.

Mostly, it sits on a shelf, gathering dust. However, it did lead to one memorable quote. A new player at my game is looking over my figure collection while the rest of us are eating dinner, and out of nowhere, he calls out, "You've got the biggest purple worm I've ever seen!"

Half a roll of paper towels later, from cleaning up all the spewed food and drink...

Plus, once you buy a big dragon or two... do you really need one in every color?

*blink* You're being facetious, right?

Once you have Tiamat, the Tarrasque, and maybe a Purple Worm, are there any other minis this size people would actually want?

I'd pass on the Tarrasque (ok, I wouldn't, but I don't actually want it), but would love to see the uber-elementals at least.

Nope. I can guess "the Tarrasque", but much more than that I don't know.

That's about the only one I'd be sure to buy. Big dragons would be nice, it's true, but the paint jobs are not always great, and big demons and dragons are the minis I most want to paint metal ones for (other than PCs). Also, I suspect toy store dragons will have better prices for about the same stuff. For example, I'm told McFarlane toys makes nice dragons (haven't been to a toy store to check.)

But the Tarrasque has a unique shape which only WotC can sell, so it's the one I'll buy from them.

-C.

EDIT: I see others have already said (almost) everything I did. Is what I get for not reading the whole thread first. Ooh, and Purple Worms would also be cool.

Hey all! :)

I'm just wondering exactly how big these models are likely to be. I have the old (as in from the 80's) Star Wars Rancor plastic model* and its about 10 inches tall and almost that wide (at the shoulders) - is that colossal on the WotC scale? Would it double for the Tarrasque? Will the Tarrasque model be even bigger? ...and which plastic model would win in a fight? :p

*Its jaws move and everything, although if a figure were to be swallowed whole I can't see them cutting their way out of its stomach.

Also, are we liable to get that horrendous rendition of the Tarrasque in the 3.0/3.5 Monster Manual, or the much better (original) fully upright walking Tarrasque (from AD&D's Monster Manual 2, or even 2nd Ed.s Monstrous Manual)? Also who did that picture of the Tarraque vs. King Kong (!?) that was pretty good.
