combining metamagic and item creation feats

I am considering making a house rule that when a character selects an item creation or metamagic feat, they also get one of the other. So, if a character chose Craft Wand, they could also pick up Maximise Spell. If someone wanted Empower, they could also pickup Craft Arms and Armor, or whatever. I don't particularly think it would be overpowering, and I would like to emphasise an often overlooked area that my players have mostly ignored, both megamagic and item creation feats.

Since my players largely overlook these options, I have almost never seen any of them in actual play. Do you think this would be too unbalanced?

Depends what kind of classes your players play. And if they will have time to make whatever they want with the craft items. Will the wizard then get 2 feats for his bonus feats?

Persoanlly, I think it would be unbalancing for my games since my players would take these feats anyway. Hard to say for your game though.

d00d ... they don't want to make items, they can buy items. They don't want metamagic, they're still casting just fine.

Don't bother.

I'm still undecided on the wizard bonus feats, leaning toward not allowing them to get the "two for one" deal with them, simply beacuse it has to be one anyway, and really the change would be to encourage casters taking them. I have no wizards in my current campaign, however, so I can waffle a while even if I do decide to implement it. :)

If you're in the league of considering these feats quite costly in general, and you want to promote their use by your PCs, just go for it.

After all, preparation casters have great use of item creation feats but not very much from metamagic, while spontaneous casters delight in metamagic but are very limited with item creation feat. If my current Sorcerer was given item creation feats for free (she of course has a good bunch of metamagic feats), I would have probably used them very very lightly - because I still have a limited number of spells known and don't want to spend too much Xp - which means that I definitely wouldn't have been sensibly more powerful.
