A casting rumor on Silver Surfer and the casting of The Punisher
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"It's official. Thomas Jane is "The Punisher". Aint It Cool got the news first hand from Marvel head-honcho Avi Arad."

"According to Variety, A teaser trailer for "The Punisher" will be attached to all prints of "The Hulk", when it commences in cinemas in a couple of months. On the casting of Thomas Jane, Artisan Pictures production prexy Richard Saperstein said "Tom is a real actor who gives weight to what will be a gritty R-rated film. This is not some special effects movie with a guy running around in spandex."
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"He's been mentioned for Bullseye, and also Lex Luthor, now the lord of the Grunt, Vin Diesel, says he'd like to play the "Silver Surfer" [comic book character folks] in a movie. "The Surfer is an intergalactic superhero," who is "one step further than all these regional superheroes.", Diesel told National Post. Diesel says he's also still interested in doing "Guys and Dolls", and also wants to do a romantic comedy."

I like Vin Diesel, but I wouldn't cast him as the Surfer. The Surfer is a gentle soul, a pacifist, not a bad-ass tough guy. And while he may have the range to pull it off, I'm sure there are better choices out there.

Off the top of my head, I'd pick Billy Zane.

He looks a bit more like the Surfer than Diesel, both in the face and in his build (he has a decent build, also). He has a much softer voice than Diesel, who comes off as harsh and gruff (granted, because that's what he's usually going for). He starred as the Phantom, so he probably wouldn't find the Surfer to be a stretch.

He's a big enough name to have recognition, but he's also not bigger than his role, as Vin Diesel (arugably) may be. The average person on the street is much more likely to recognize Vin Diesel than the Silver Surfer, and when you go to a Vin Diesel movie, you're expecting action. A Silver Surfer movie should be sci-fi/adventure, not action.

Actually it might not be such a bad idea. The surfer would be a fully CG creation, and Vin did do Iron Giant which reminded me of the surfer in some ways.

You mean the guy who did The Phantom?

Nah. He's much better as Prince Namor, or Victor Von Doom.

Besides, sci-fi can have action element. Look at AOTC.
