[The Le] comics-to-film reviews

I'm sorry, but you lost me after you said that Cyclops was your favourite comic character.
Alongside Nightcrawler, Cyclops is my fave X-Men. All the inspiring things Wolverine said in X3 should've been said by Cyclops. People just don't seem to get that he's the Aragorn of the X-Men.

I thought he was talking about the live action Legends of the Superheroes shows from the 70's. At the time I thought it was cool that they have live action versions of a number of characters not seen in the media at that time (Sivana, Sinestro, Green Lantern, Mordu. Weather Wizard, Solomon Grundy).
.

Nope. I am talking about the Justice League of America Pilot from 1997. Here you go:

That's a bit of a stretch IMO, but ok.
Its really not, though.

He IS the X-Men's real leader, the one capable of pulling them all together and pushing them to be the best they can. The movies ended up giving this role to Wolverine because of how insanely popular the character is, but that's just not Wolvie.

Thankfully, the comics, especially lately, are doing a great job of showing Cyclops as he is. Not only that, but it sounds like he's going to be playing a very major role in the upcoming Endangered Species event.

X-Men - 4/5

X2 - 5/5 A perfect X flick IMO. Too much wolvie at times though.

X3 - 3/5 Two movies jammed together. Should have been X3 and X4. Still fun.

V for Vendetta - 0/5 A butchery of my favorite graphic novel. There was no change the W's siblings made that made it better. Just awful. Took a great book and tried to apply it to America today which ruined it.

Hellboy - 4/5 . Really enjoyed HB and AS, the movie had a good tone and I'm pumped for the sequal.

Superman I - 3/5 Good but I don't care for the vision of Lex here, Hackman does the best with what he has though.

Superman II - 4/5 Better, the director's cut was even better though. Needed better fights.

Superman III - 1/5

Superman IV: The Quest for Peace - 1/5

Superman Returns - 1/5 Slow, boring. Emo-Superman blew. Lois looks 19. More idiot Luthor with the same plot as Superman the movie. Superkid is the single worst thing in any Superman movie and will taint all the sequels.

Batman - 4/5 - Keaton is good, the sets are great, Joker is too goofy at times and wonderful at others. Solid.

Batman Returns - 2/5 Liked it for the cat suit and Walken. Everything else is crap.

Batman Forever - 1/5

Batman & Robin - 1/5

Batman Begins - 4/5 stars - bad action scene filing and editing.

Fantastic Four - 1/5 stars. The Torch is great, Doom is terrible. Everything else is just bad.

Blade - 4/5 stars. Great vampire action flick.

The Crow - 4/5 stars.

A History of Violence - 5/5 stars. You said it best. Great flick.

The Road to Perdition - 4/5. Strong gangster flick. Good acting and well filmed.

Batmann tv show - 1/5 Too campy, even as a kid I didn't like it.

The Incredible Hulk (tv) - 2/5 The Hulk should have fought some bad guys, lacked fun IMO.

Judge Dredd - 2/5 stars. Rob Schneider...ugh.

Justice League of America (live action tv 1997) 1/5 You said it best. Not even bad enough to be funny.

The Mask - 5/5 I agree.

Men in Black - 5/5 I agree.

Men in Black II - 3/5 Tommy Lee Jones alone makes it fun, but its not as good as the first one.

Mystery Men - 3/5 How can you not like the Shoveler?

The Punisher (1989) - 3/5 Cheesy and bad but it has a charm. Better than the next try. "You are a good boy Tommy, grow up to be a good man. Or I will come for you and Iwill punish!".

The Rocketeer - 2/5 Just didn't like it.

Spawn - 1/5 stars. You said it all. What was Sheen thinking?

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990) - 3/5. It was just ok.

Timecop - 3/5 - watchable but nothing special
Spider-man TV - 1/5 - Bad, just bad.

League of Extraordinary Gentlemen - 1/5

Sin City - 4/5 Loved it. Great Marv, Dwight, and the rest.

TheLe, I think you're way underestimating how hard first movies are (talking about your average scores for X-Men and Spider-Man here).

That's a really hard thing to film, and especially for Spider-Man, that presented the whole origin, with almost 100% authenticity, and make it watchable and appealing to a modern audience, in my opinion, that's an amazing feat for any director.

There's a reason why Mark Millar titled Cyclops' return to the Ultimate X-Men "Return of the King".

I get that Wolverine is a very popular character, heck I love him too, but Cyclops is the heart and soul of that team... just not in the movies.

I think that has as much to do with Jackman being miscast though. He's too touchy-feely to be a real Wolverine, so they've changed the character of Wolverine to fit him better.

Hence the 3/5 rating. Not show off, not falling behind. I think they are excellent starting movies, but definitely lacking when compared to other movies.

Keep in mind that Superman I was excellent, as was Blade I, and Batman Begins.

I can excuse X-men since it was a "team" movie, which can be harder since you have so many main characters, but there is no reason why Spider-man couldn't be better, especially when compared to the three movies I listed above.
