Comic Books: What are you reading?

I need to catch up on Walking Dead and Locke and Key. The last time I read one was probably like 4 or 5 months back. I also need to figure out what's going on with Mouseguard. I haven't read a new one of those in well over a year.

Eric,

When it comes to Marvel comic, a good place to start might be with the Ultimate universe. It is separate from the main Marvel continuity, so you can jump right in, IMO. Ultimate Spider-Man is fantastic, and you can start at the very beginning with the Ultimate Collection trades.

Let's see, in the Marvel Universe, I'm down to just The Superior Spider-Man and Fantastic Four. The bulk of my comic book titles are now based on TV shows or novels: the various Barsoom titles, Buffy, Angel & Faith, Doctor Who, Steed & Mrs. Peel, and Godzilla. Oh, and I'm reading my way through The Boys via the compilation softbacks.

Well, Eric, from what you've seen, what do you like in the superhero (or other) comics genre?

The Ultimates universe is, in essence, a fast revisioning/rehashing of some of the high points of the Marvel Universe. Imagine they wrote a Cliff's Notes on the Marvel Universe, but a somewhat more mature cast on almost everything. The Hulk, for example, has more than anger-management issues - there's a sexual component to his rages as well. The Ultimates line are, on the whole, reasonably well written, and have good artwork. And, the current marvel Movies borrow heavily from the Ultimates lines.

Ultimate Spider Man, especially, has some good notes in it. Peter Parker is *young*, and written like it.

I'm having a super hard time answering that question for some reason. I guess I like a plot with a twist, a cool concept, I think I like science fictiony backstories maybe more than magical/supernatural.

You enjoyed Smallville - the story continues in the Smallville comic. They even call it "Season 11"; it's digital only, I believe.

Try the new Avengers series written by Jonathan Hickman. It's much more of a big SF story that happens to star the Avengers than a superhero comic with some SF trappings.

I'd also recommend everything Matt Fraction is currently writing for Marvel: Fantastic Four, FF, and Hawkeye. Fraction is doing some of the best writing in comics today, and art in both FF and Hawkeye is excellent.

And also Brian K. Vaughn/Fiona Staples beautiful science-fantasy space opera thing, Saga.

Well, it was a super-broad question, by design (and irony, for a discussion of super-heros, right?). That can make it either difficult or easy.

Perhaps if we reframe the question - accepting that you haven't read much, what examples from the genre have you liked, and why? Like any of the superhero movies that have come along lately? Liked a particular Supers-genre game you played in? Morrus mentioned you liked Smallville - I liked much of the early seasons of the show, myself. So, what about the show did you like?

(This all to tease out a few things that folks can use for suggestions, of course)

Heh. Those are some of the reasons I started reading Atomic Robo - what's more science fiction-y than an atomic-powered robot build by Nikola Tesla? I can only think of one thing - Carl Sagan fighting off a Cthuloid horror with a lightning gun! And that appears in Atomic Robo as well :p
