Command/Rebuke How does it work?

OK so in the PHB a evil cleric can command or rebuke a undead or a Cleric with a Domain that allows you to Command/Rebuke some creature type like a evil cleric.

Under the Commanding Undead it says that if you would destroy (as a good cleric) the undead you now command it.

Now to Destroy Undead you need to make a Turn check to see what the highest HD undead can be turned. Then Roll Turn damage. If your cleric lvl is 2x or more of the Undead’s HD you destroy (Command) it.

Then it says under the Commanding for Evil clerics. That if you focus on one undead you can command one undead who’s HD are up to equal your cleric lvl.

So how does that work? You cant ever destroy undead with HD more than half your lvl. Soooo what gives?

How have your dealt with it as PC can get this with say the Fire Domain an Command Fire Creatures.

I think you may have misread that section on page 140 of the PH. What it says is this: "At any one time, the cleric may command any number of undead whose total Hit Dice do not exceed his level." This means that, although he cannot command a single undead whose Hit Dice is more than half of his own, he can command several undead whose Hit Dice do not exceed his own. So an 8th level cleric may command 4 2HD undead, 2 4HD undead, but no single undead with more than 4HD.

It's not the limit on the number of Hit Dice he's concerned about.

To Command (rather than just Rebuke) undead, you need the same result as a good cleric Destroying (rather than just Turning). That only happens when your level is double their hit dice.

Two out of three times when this thread come up, it is decided that it is just a mistake (about being able to focus on one undead).

From the SRD:

Destroying Undead
If a combatant has twice as many levels (or more) as the undead have Hit Dice, the combatant destroys any that the combatant would normally turn.
Evil Clerics and Undead
Evil clerics channel negative energy to rebuke (awe) or command (control) undead rather than channeling positive energy to turn or destroy them. An evil cleric makes the equivalent of a turning check. Undead that would be turned are rebuked instead, and those that would be destroyed are commanded.

I got all that from the PH. I mean this:

Then it says under the Commanding for Evil clerics. That if you focus on one undead you can command one undead who’s HD are up to equal your cleric lvl.
