Command word/Use activated

Question

First Post
Must i wear the item in question for it to be activated via command word/use activated?

Example : I have a ring of invisibility that is use activated(by default). Do i need to wear it to activate it? What happens if i take it off while i am still invis?

Or a ring of invis that is activated via a command word?

An item must be worn or held properly when its powers are to be used.
Otherwise, what would be the point of body slots, if you could use the item from your pocket. ;)

A ring that is not worn, does not function.

A use-activated item activates automatically, when the it is used, which in the case of a ring means, when it is worn. That would be the typical invisibility ring from myth.

Yes, it takes a standard action. Though, I would think your hands would have to be free (i.e. sheath yr sword or shield if you are holding them first, so both your hands are free)

Just to be clear, most rings in the DMG are either command-word or continual, not use-activated:
Usually, a ring’s ability is activated by a command word (a standard action that does not provoke attacks of opportunity) or it works continually. Some rings have exceptional activation methods, according to their descriptions.
A ring which turned you invisible when worn would be continual, not use-activated. (The standard one in the DMG requires a command word anyway.) If a ring was use-activated, it would need to mention explicitly how it was activated in its description.
