Companion Hit Points, Roll or Average?

I know how it is written in the UA but I was wondering if anyone has found a strong preference between averaging ranger companion hit points or rolling each hit die.

Furthermore has anyone found that giving the creature its own hit dice instead of a HP pool confusing or slowing things down dramatically?

I would let the player decide. Depends on how you/he rolls for the PC hit points. My table rolls, but I let them take half if they roll low.
