Compiling a list of classic movies & books that inspire D&D

I am trying to put together a list of movies & books, to view & read, which captures the various aspects of D&D.

To date my list of classics are:

(Movies)
  • Conan the Barbarian
  • Any of the LotR trilogy
  • Krull
(Books)
  • Wizards & Warriors (by ? a NZer)
  • Any of the LotR trilogy
  • Jack Vance The Dying Earth very clear influence on D&D Magic system
  • Robert E Howard Conan particular stories - Red Nails, The Phoenix on the Sword, Tower of the Elephant, People of the Black Circle
  • Edgar Rice Burroughs John Carter of Mars and the other Barsoom books

As you can see my list sucks big time. I've seen & read much more but then again I don't want to rely on my pov to put together a recommended list, I'd rather have an informed EnWorld consensus.

What should I definitely add?

(Thanks in advance.)

If you have the 1e DMG that has a big list of books.

Books:
Jack Vance The Dying Earth very clear influence on D&D Magic system
Robert E Howard Conan particular stories - Red Nails, The Phoenix on the Sword, Tower of the Elephant, People of the Black Circle
Edgar Rice Burroughs John Carter of Mars and the other Barsoom books

LOTR didn't have much of anything to do with D&D but any type of mythology from Greek,Norse and Egyption can be seen in the Pantheons of the D&D races.

Can anyone post the list of recommended reading from the 1e DMG?

Christopher Rowley's Bazil and Relkin novels have a very good D&D world feel to them.

Roger Zelazany's Amber books, Jack of Shadows, Dilvish the Damned, Lord of Light.

Moorcock's stuff, Elric, Hawkmoon, Corum of the Silver Hand.

Actually, according to Gygax, Tolkien's writings only marginally influenced the creation of D&D. The writings of Robert E. Howard, Fritz Lieber, and Jack Vance were much bigger sources of inspiration.

Recommened Book List

I base my D&D game on books and authors not directly associated with D&D. Mithgar series by Dennis McKiernan, the Shannara series by Terry Brooks, the Drenai series by David Gemmell, and the Coronia series, Spearwielder's series by R.A. Salvatore.
