Actually, according to Gygax, Tolkien's writings only marginally influenced the creation of D&D. The writings of Robert E. Howard, Fritz Lieber, and Jack Vance were much bigger sources of inspiration.

Yep, Gary tacked on some Tolkienesque names and concepts (mainly the ranger, orc, and halfling/hobbit) to something otherwise unrelated. This, to me, is the reason why D&D is fundimentally clumsy at low-magic, epic storylines, compared to...I dunno, killing monsters/bandits/peasants (for those evil campaigns) and taking their magic items/gold/ears, then fighting the leader of the monsters/bandits/peasants and taking their hoard/sword/shoes...

Since I own a lot of fantasy comics, I based most of my D&D adventures around these

Movies:
Beastmaster
Ladyhawke
Hawk the Slayer
Willow

Despite their cheese, I love these movies especially Ladyhawke and Beastmaster. I once ran a campaign where Dar went through a time portal and allied with Itianne Navarre and Isabell, who gained partial control of their transformation after the curse was lifted
