Complete Adventurer - sounds good

If you have even the slightest feeling that Dragons really should be the "It" enemeis of D&D, yet aren't too inspired by the entries in the MM, then buy this book without hesitation. I picked it up when it and Complete Warrior were 60% off at Amazon a while back (just because of the price) and have never regretted the purchase. i defy anyone to read any theee conituous pages of the Draconomicon and not have an idea for an adventure, if not an entire compaign, centered around dragons. And that, my friends, is what a game book should do -- it should grab you by the short hairs and demand that you use the stuff you just read, in some manner, in the very next game you run or play in. nay. it should demand you call off your current campaign and start playing "it" right then and there.

Whew. I feel better.

I'm gonna have to take the challenge then.

Draconomicon was sexy. It was also written very well and was an enjoyable read.

And I can think of almost nothing from that book that I care to actually use that I didn't already know (or couldn't come up with myself in a pinch).

I felt it was a decent buy as a picture book and as entertainment. As a game book I felt I wasted a horrid amount of money.

Which is to say, overall, I'd suggest checking it out thoroughly in the store before purchase.

Given the title of hte work, perhaps the authors were attempting to achieve just that ;)

I don't mind Merric's optimistic outlook towards WotC products. It's refreshing to see someone who focuses on the positive rather than the negative. I can think of several ENWorlders who never seem to be happy about anything; nearly everything they write is a rant or negative comment about something or another. Merric's "focus on the good rather than the bad" attitude is a breath of fresh air, and I always like reading his posts.
Amen to that.

I didn't pick up that book because it understate the bard class.

I thought it was great for the Bard class.
It had a Pirate's of Penzance homage.
And a Robin Hood, the Musical PRC.
And a class based on the Itsy Bitsy Spider...

Or perhaps it was just my mind desperatly seeking something
bardlike from the classes within. ( Or just my mind playing
tricks on me ) But as I was reading through it I kept hearing
in my mind the notes to Men in Tights...

Another gamer disillusioned by Song & Silence:

I was very excited about the book, sure that it would improve on the bard class. Of course, I was very excited about 3e, in part because of the promise of a bard core class. My first PC was a bard (TPK at level 2).

After that character died I vowed not to play another bard until Song & Silence came out. On the day it was released I had an important business meeting, but I managed to get away and call my FLGS to see if the anticipated book had arrived. It had, and I went out of my way and made adjustments to my schedule to be able to pick it up on the way home. The day was going great, I even settled a case I had been trying to get rid of for ages on the cell phone, sitting in the parking lot waiting to go in the store.

In my excitement, I rushed in and bought the book, only to return and see that I had locked my keys in the car. I called my wonderful, understanding wife, who was pregnant and at home with our two boys. She had to load them in the minivan and drive to bring me the keys. While waiting, I sat on the curb and started reading the book that would save the bard class.

Only it didn't. For this I waited for months and went out of my, inconveniencing my entire family in the process? I didn't buy another splat book for over a year.

Compete Adventurer better be good.
