Complete Adventurer, Spells and Special Abilities

Our online campaign has no lack of multi-class combos, so we find a book like Complete Adventurer quite useful. Ascetic Rogue just made my rogue / monk / assassin concept even more interesting.

I have to agree, CAdv made me giggle with glee as I was reading it.

My sorceror's next level (in which I also gain a feat) will of course be a level of Monk, which will effectively bump my AC 10 points (along with a +2 to all saves).

I will have more or less an AC of 31 versus about any type of attack (melee, touch, incorporeal...).

:D

Woo... very nice. Uh... what is your Wisdom and your Level?

Cheers!

He's taking the feat that allows sorcerer and monk levels to stack for some things, but the big boost is they get Cha to AC instead of Wis.

...turns page, reads rest of feat description.

Oh my.

Nice.

Cheers!

Arrow storm comes to mind. !
Arrow Storm really bothers me as a spell, less so than Bladestorm though, which is pretty much Whirlwind Attack in spell form.

Still, I like a lot of what I've seen in the book, though the PrC's focusing on organizations weren't really my cup of tea. There's a lot of stuff in the book for anyone. Much more broadly appealing than Complete Arcane. The expanded skills are nice, the feats are pretty cool (I have a sudden urge to make a Barbarian with the Leap Attack feat now...), and the PrC's in general are pretty cool (if many are just updated ones...).

I think it's a very cool book, but it doesn't get my gears turning like Complete Arcane. :)

Indeed.

POWER GAMER ALERT ! ! !

I play a Sorc 8/Pal 2/Fatespinner 1 with the feat practiced spellcaster.

I was about to grab another fatespinner level when I bought CAdv. The fatespinner levels will have to wait for another level.

Decisions, decisions...

:D

My AC will be 31 and my saves will have an average of 20.

You have to realise though... my first character in this campaign (that started from level 1) was a paladin that bought the farm in Sunless Citadel, mainly because the Druid delayed in curing me for instead throwing some inefective spells at the BBEG (keep you meat shields alive !). I created another character a level lower (as per our campaign rules) that was a single class sorceror, that also bought the farm at level 11.

At that point I said "ENOUGH ! ! !" and went for the character build stipulated above.

Rare are the things that can bring me down now, and rarer still will they be after I get that level of Monk. ;)

My monk Druid just got better :)

I rate them for my usefulness as follows

Complete Adventurer
Complete Arcane
Complete Warrior
Complete Divine

I use complete Warrior more than Arcane but I find that Arcane is a better book overall. It was really well done. I use a lot of Adventurer so far and I have only had it for less than a month.

Very nice indeed.

Of course, losing 3 levels of spellcasting isn't fun (especially for a sorcerer), but NOT DYING makes up for it. ;)

AC 31 isn't that problematic, though. I mean, it's probably a little above average for that level. (My 10th & 11th level PCs have ACs from 20 to 28), but you still get hit by CR 8 Stone Giants (+17 attack) and other dedicated combat creatures.

..and just when you think you're save, you roll a 1 for that saving throw...

Cheers!

Anyone who plays a ranger to 14th level deserves a reward at the end of it. ;)

It does tend to run you out of arrows quickly, though.

Cheers!

Well, Complete Adventurer has its goodies: Nice PrC, some funny feats, updated spells.
But (as always with a new WotC release...) some of the stuff may bother a DM and/or player.

Yesterday, there was a discussion about the book IMG; should it be used, what is not ok ("broken"), what should be modified?

After an hour or two, we decided (vote 4 to 2) not to use spells that can be cast as a swift or immediate action (except Featherfall and quickened spells).

Some spells need some corrections, IMHO, because they shine compared to feats and/or abilities used by monsters/PrCs.
These are (off my mind): Arrowmind (no AoOs when using a bow in melee combat, the archer can use his bow to make AoOs + it is an immediate spell!; see Order of the Bow Initiate), Assay Resistance (+10 on SR checks + swift spell; Complete Arcane, though), Entangling Staff (+8 bonus on grab + Improved Grab + a swift action to cast!), Arrowstorm (ranged attack against every foe within one increment + swift spell; see Arcane Archer).
While a lot of the new swift spells are useful for multiclass characters (those qualifying for Arcane Trickster, Divine Seeker, Assassin...) are not a big problem, some spells emulate abilities of a PrC, taking something "special" from these classes and make it available to core classes (especially the ranger).
