Complete Dungeons of Dread Photo Gallery

I've got the starter and two booster so far. the sculpts are pretty okay/nice - definitively not worse than before (though the art style has changed). The paintjobs seem to be worse, especially on the uncommons and rares. But nothing a quick touch-up cannot solve.

I've also noticed a slight scale creep, but now they fit better with my other Reaper 28mm minis, so I don't complain.

Cheers, LT.

Judging from the gallery, this set is a really mixed bag. Some minis look quite good like the oni and the transparent ones, others look extremly sloppy. Hope the actual minis are decent.

I have a Q about minis. never seen em irl.

to start out my 4E games cheaply, i plan to use some DnD minis to represent PCs and cardstock counters to represent mobs (these http://www.warehouse23.com/item.html?id=WWP16040)

will they sizes be OK?

Also if some of my PCs are uncommon and some are commons, will they be different sizes?
The sizes don't change between common and uncommon. There might be some scale creep across time, but really all that matters is that medium sized creatures fit in a 1" square, large in a 2x2 square, etc.

In general, commons and uncommons are a great way to get lots of minis for the rpg cheaply.

Has Wizards changed sculptors? Or gone with a different company to manufacturer these?

I'm not going to say they look bad, but they do look more toy-like and just "different" somehow than the other sets.

For comparison, the other set galleries are here: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/mix/gallery

The new ones look awful compared to some of the old ones. I picked on one at random ("War Drums") and both the sculpting and the painting look an order of magnitude better on those old ones.

Compare War Drums / Ogre War Hulk or Hill Giant Barbarian (detailed sculpting, shading on musculature of figures)

with

Dungeons of Dread / Ettin or Bugbear Headreaver (flattish figures, flat colour paint job)

Honestly the dungeons of dread figures look like they came out of a kinder egg.

What is worse, the horrible sculpting makes it look impractical to try to improve matters by painting them yourself.

Ugh, ugh, ugh. :(

Man, those are just bad. Especially the silver dragon, which looks like a cheap toy someone spraypainted.

On the positive side, the death knight looks kinda like a fantasy chesspiece, which is sorta neat. And the warforged looks a little bit like Dr. Doom.

Several ugh sculpts and many uhg paint jobs with a few gems thrown in.

Hell, I've gotten some better sculps out of gumball machines. Notably there have been some cool coiled snakes of recent that fit PERFECTLY onto a one inch base. To say nothing of various Japanese gashapon figs I will I could find more of.

The orc I could forgive, while his face is toony, the look kinda fits.

The bugbear looks like he returns to his toony 1EMM roots

The grick is a step backwards IMHO, the GOL fig was so much better.

Augh! What did they do to the gnoll? Are they intentionally downgrading their sculpting? The gnolls we just had recently had been awesome. The Demonic Gnoll Archer, Demonic Gnoll priestess, gnoll barbarian were all top notch sculpts. Then came the gnoll clawfighter and now this?

That wyvern has a pretty horrid seam and a terminal case of ‘Uge ‘Ead syndrome.

The hook horror really only suffers because of the out of proportion arm scythes and the ‘shoulder plates’.

The Oni’s big head bulldog jowls hurt the fig IMHO.

Angel of Valor is just Meh. I’ve seen other CMG do far better non feathered angels.

The dire wolf is pretty cool in my book, though that shoulder seem is baaad. Still, i'll want dozens of that big ole puppy

Also keep in mind that, in terms of paint quality, the old galleries have photos of paint masters, and newer galleries are using the actual minis. In War Drums, for example, take a look a Warduke. His face has black in it, and the sword has blood on it.

I stopped buying them after Giants of Legends and never bought any boosters since then. However I made an exception to get a single Dungeons of Dread booster and I am really disappointed.

From Harbinger to Giants of Legends you could see the quality of the painting improve with each set (just compare Harbinger zombie to Giants of Legends zombie).

Dungeons of Dread is definately a huge step backward compared to Giants of Legends. My rare was the Deathknight and it looks like straight from Harbinger, honestly the painting looks like the Dread Guard from Archfiends (and this was a common while the Deathknight is a friggin rare).

Because of the new packaging design I could also see the PC minis from the new starter set even though I didn't buy one. They look just as terrible.
