Complete Dungeons of Dread Photo Gallery

Also keep in mind that, in terms of paint quality, the old galleries have photos of paint masters, and newer galleries are using the actual minis. In War Drums, for example, take a look a Warduke. His face has black in it, and the sword has blood on it.

Yeah, i noticed that, too. It´s pretty apparent if you compare the galleries.

I have to say that many of the models look better in person than they do in that gallery. I also have to say that some of the gallery photos are better than the actual figs.

For instance, the Death Knight in the gallery has a well defined eye socket. The one I got in my booster is the same sculpt but the shading is just smeared on and his eye socket isn't any darker than the rest of its face.

But I also got the Vampire Vizer and it actually looks pretty good. The sculpt is pretty detailed and the paint is at least varied. The halfling paladin also has a really nice face sculpt, all though there is little detail in the pain.

All in all, I'm happy so far and would say that most of the figs look better in person.

Hmm, that explains things.
My impression of the set was that's it's pretty much like every set (except the first three): hit and miss. My favorite is clearly the Oni - absolutely great! Most of the other rares are nice but not overwhelmingly so.
I also want a Bulette and a Dire Wolf which shouldn't be difficult since they're uncommon. The Shadowhunter Bat is also coolshiny.

Other's are either ugly (bugbear, orc) or suffer from the revised 4E look (gnoll, troglodyte).

Ugh, the troglodyte paint job is horrible. Having a physical model, I can confirm that it is literally gray and brown. It's face is all gray... no wash for detail, no teeth, no EYES. Why some minis got a wash and others didn't is beyond me.

To repeat, the paint job on the trog is just absent. It is a gray lump in vague humanoid shape.

The orc actually isn't horrible in person b/c it's chainmail is finely textured. It's little ax is kind of cartoony, as is its face, but at least there's some detail on the fig.

In contrast, this is easily my favorite minis set.

I admit that the paint jobs can be iffy, but oh boy! are the sculpts fantastic. The new minis favor action poses, and are often times standing unbalanced or captured in mid move, with a slight exaggeration of proportions lending a particularly delightful kinesthetic aesthetic.

I was fervently hoping not to crack open a Magma Brute (it's a big orange lump?), but I did, and now it's my top mini.

I also am delighted with the gutsy color selection for the minis. A hideous, snarling gnoll with beautiful bright green eyes? Neat

This is also the first time I've ever wanted an Orc

This is really disappointing because I was seriously thinking about jumping back into the D&D mini scene starting with the new starter and the new set. But Everything I have seen (real photos posted on forums, plus this gallery) continually give the impression that they are poorly sculpted and painted compared to some previous sets. It's awful!

Not the way to kick of 4e, in my opinion, Hasbro...

Ah, so the old sets were actually worse than their galleries then (you can tell I've not purchased any D&D miniatures).

I'm just really disappointed in the quality of the sculptures of the most recent ones - they all look as if they've been flattened under a press (or designed to be very flat because... well, easier and cheaper to design that way?)

Wierd thing is most of these are obviously directly based on the art in the 'Worlds and Monsters' book and I would assume MM which do not look bad as drawings.

I have a lot of minis from harbringer on and the bummer thing is they had gotten much better over time but this set seems like a step back. Even if I get over some of the 4ed flavor changes the quality of paint and color choices seem crummy and cartooney, back to anglefire/giants/harbringer territory.

That said I still look forward to doing a limited tourney with my friends, I just hope I don't pull any whammeys!

I have three boosters and got a few good ones. The silver dragon is beautiful and is actually nicer than the Capricious Cooper Dragon from Desert of Desolation.

I also got the Angel of Valor and the Ice Archon (2). They are cool.

The trog does look terrible. I don't like their new look, but then again I support their differentiation of the reptillian/draconic races.

The lamia (from the gallery shot, since I don't have one) looks completely different than previous editions. Does this mean lamia are no loner lion centaur women?

OMG! The Vrock looks terrible! I own a vrock-like mini from Reaper which is amazing (and still unpainted .... slacker that I am), but the D&D vrock is a piece of crap.

C.I.D.

This new set, which I'm still excited about, as it should have a lot of iconic mini's in it. Looks pretty damn bad relatively speaking.

For example if you pull up the desert of desolation, and compare it side by side with this new set. You can see the differences as stark as day. Take a look at the cliffwalk archer of the Desert set, compare it to the Elf Archer in the Dungeons set.

What the hell? And if you notice the colors in the dungeons set they all look flat.

And are you kidding with that Orc? or Troglodyte..

Yuck!

They should be ashamed!
