Complete Warrior base classes

With Gestalt, you get full bab, good will save, arcane resistance, mettle, and the ability to make people fail their saves. I think a 5 level dip is the deepest I'd go, for powergame purposes, and yes, the new Duskblade eclipses it in most ways, but still, its got a niche.

I like Warlock too, but 3/4 bab is not full bab.

But with Gestalt, Full BAB for a 'lock is easy to get. And without Gestalt... you're either doing stuff that hits with a range-touch or forcing Saves.... who needs good bab then?

Need I mention Warlock | Scout (or Rogue or Ninja)?

Mettle is cool, as is Arcane resistance. But just looking at the cursing aspect... go with Warlock. So what if you have to get in close for a B-slap to do it. >.<

I'm playing a Dread Necromancer on the other side, so A) Hexblade flavor fits in with it nicely, and B) I need the d10 hp and such, if I stuck Warlock with Dread Necromancer? Well, I dunno, that'd also be interesting, but for different reasons. I wouldnt get the hp and such, though.

I don't like the class either, but....

Am I really the only one who like the illustration for the Samurai? Very D&Dish, and quite flavorful. It almost makes me want to play a dwarven samurai.

Ahh, I was just talking in general. If I was doing a D-Necromancer, I'd also take something with at least a d10... and Hexblade easily suits the flavor.

What are your thoughts on the Death Master out of Dragon Compendium vol. 1?

If we are going by Art...

1) Dwarven Samurai: now there is something you don't see everyday!

2) Hexblade: meh.

3) Swashbuckler: meh.

The Samurai is not so good.

It's is fairly telling that this is the highest praise this class has received so far in this thread. Ignoring the art. :p I don't think I have ever seen such unanimity on any subject on any gaming board before. (Although no doubt someone will leap in with praise now just to be contrary.)

::wearing a false beard and coke-bottom eyeglasses:: CW Samurais roxor, mang!

I agree that the Samurai doesn't really fit the flavor that well. I looked at the OA samurai, and I would use it for an Oriental campaign.

But strictly from a mechanical standpoint (if you removed the name samurai from it) would the class really be that bad? The unique thing about it is the TWF in heavy armor. I think it would encourage more front line people to use something other than 2-handing and leap-attacking, which is very prevalant in our gaming group. It also (somewhat) encourages a higher Cha, which is always a huge dump stat.

Thoughts?

The problem with the Two Swords As One ability (disregarding any lack of Samurai feel) is that it's weaker than just having the feats, 'cause they're only useable with a bastard sword and a short sword. If a foe sunders the short sword (easier than the bastard), the character just loses its main attack feature. In order to be balanced, the ability should grant the Two-Weapon chain, and add an additional bonus if you use the bastard/short combo (maybe an additional +1 to hit and AC).

Strictly from a mechanical point of view, it would still be bad. IMO, inflexibility is bad mechanics.
