[Completely OT] Magazines

My family gets Popular Mechanics already, so I'm not going to be picking that up. I do love the articles, but half of the magazine is devoted to carpentry (which I'm too mechanically inept to ever try) and automobiles (which, strangely, never seem to focus on autos I can afford).

I do like the articles, though. I especially liked (within the last five years) the article about the future US Navy might be built on a catamaran basis (it had some really cool pictures), the Sukhoi advanced tactical fighter that might be a challenge to the US Air Force's future fighter, and the aerocopter that might be a technologically-workable replacement for the tiltrotor that keeps crashing and killing Marines.

Haven't had Popular Science in many a year.... What type of articles have they had recently?

Sea Classics doesn't seem to be available. Guess I'll have to look for that in those little flyers they toss in with textbooks at the College bookstore. :)

Please, don't do that. I ordered Discover from one of those my freshman year - as it turns out, those little flyers are from publisher's clearing house, and the junk mail hasn't ceased since. It followed me through three different address changes. It'll get you too.

On the bright side, I may have already won 15 million dollars.

look for "Garbage" a great 'no-tilt' environment magazine, it was hit hard by its unbiased review of the diaper ndustry, and calls the greens on their crap, as well as the rest...good stuff!

I, too, happen to like Sci Am. I also think that, as far as I can tell, the accusations of being a "liberal soapbox" are more based on some of the ecological articles. And IMO those were not liberal-leaning, they were honest.

If you want to actually look at some of their articles, you can go to http://www.sciam.com/

Many of the other magazines that have been mentioned are also good publications.

If you want something a bit more odd, you might also look into The Skeptic. It focuses on examining possible "pseudoscience". I have only read an article or two, personally, so I cannot judge it in full.

Omni had some good points, but it's actual science content was... frequently questionable.

Yeah, but it's comics were good, it's fiction was top notch (Harlan Ellison actually had something nice to say about Omni, if you can believe that!) and it's science pieces, while often speculative, were never sold as anything more than that.

It met my needs:)

My favorite science magazine of all time is Science News. It comes out weekly, covers all areas of science, and is up to date on the newest and most interesting research. Plus they make sure that the articles are written for anyone of any discipline to understand.

I used to get Discover, National Geographic, Scientific American, and Popular Science. Science News is better than all of them combined.

I also miss Omni. Like Teflon Billy said, it met my needs, too.

Aviation Week & Space Technology is another good library browse; very good for keeping up with military and space tech as long as you remember that half of what they're talking about doesn't exist, wont exist and can't exist. AvLeak is often used as a sort of tech propaganda piece...which means its perfect for gamers :D

Janes' Defense Weekly is another good military tech mag, with a horrifying subscription cost. Definitely one to browse in a library. The people dealing with these things in the real world are reading and paying attention to it, though.

Cinefex is a nice SFX magazine. Usually has lots of good prop, creature and background shots. I read it for business reasons, but I always find something to use in my games every issue.
