I currently have onboard sound. If I put in a sound card, will that improve perfomence? Also, will WIN XP auto detect the new hardware?

It's difficult to say whether or not getting a sound card will improve performance without knowing what kind of onboard sound you have now (there are a lot versions out there, and they vary a lot in quality and in CPU utilization) what kind of card you're considering, and whether your goal is to reduce CPU utilization (and hence possibly speed up other things) or to improve audio quality.

IIRC, the new sound card will replace the onboard sound controller. So it's best to hook up your speakers to the new card.

At least you have a backup, in case your new sound card is defective.
