Conan 1st printing worth it?

I've been wanting to get this for a long time, but I could never bring myself to hand over 50 bucks for it. The used bookstore down the road has it for $20 So, should I grab it, or wait and get the new Atlantean edition for $30 more?

Depends. If you just want the rules, wait for the pocket handbook for the same price. hopefully it won't be riddled with as many editing gaffes.

If you are looking for the setting info as well as the rules, and don't mind getting out your sharpie and correcting a bunch of stuff, then I'd say $20 is worth it.

Caveat: I was a playtester for the game. So, take this reply with a grain of salt.

It depends on what you're looking for. For me, the game is too much a departure from the core d20 (D&D) rules set. I wouldn't even have a playtest copy if another member of our group hadn't given it back to me. On the other hand, another mutual friend bought a copy at a con just because all our names are in it, even though his isn't. There are flavor points and setting information that are probably worth $20. If you want a book to mine for ideas about a Hyborian game, this used copy is probably worth it. If you're mainly looking for the Conan OGL rules, it's worth the $20 to get this copy used or to pick up a copy of the pocket edition with the corrections but not the fancy layout. If you want a corrected copy, get the Atlantean Edition or the pocket edition. If you want the rules and the nice layout, etc.; then get the Atlantean Edition.

I think I would find it especially worth it if you can trade in some books from your shelves that you're no longer using for $20 worth of credit to pick up this game for no money out of your pocket. Then you can read it and see for yourself essentially for free. One gamer's trash is another gamer's treasure, after all.

As an aside, I found The Road of Kings to be exceptional. I would expect anything by that author, Vincent Darlage, in this line to be good. Mongoose has called for freelance adventure writers for this game, so there may be some modules you can actually play one day.

I've got the orginal printing and it serves its purpose. Sure, there are errors but I can usually figure out what is meant.

The typoes are not that bad, the book is easily understandable (even with Spellb.ook) so you dont realy need to get the new edition. That goes double if you are just looking for setting info as the essay describing the Hyborian world is straight from REH and doesnt have any of the errors.

If you plan on using it as the GAME, then get the Atlantean Edition. If you plan on using it as a d20 resource for your campaign (or plan on using the D&D rules in Hyboria) then pick the 1st print up as cheap as you can get it.

The 'pocket' version will be crunch (rules) only.

The pocket edition will have no illustrations, so I would go with the first edition for the same price, the pictures are rather good at conveying the feel of the world. If I saw a copy for $20 I would snap it up.

It is however not a grandmother friendly book illustration wise, partial nudity every other page, though only in the border.
